The SB1 frame is used on shotguns and rimfires, is not heat treated. The SB2 frame is heat treated and used on all of the centerfire rifles. Shotgun barrels can be fitted to SB2 frames but rifle barrels can't be fitted to SB1 frames by NEF/H&R.

Nope. you have to send the receiver in for them to fit a  barrel. As for the caliber suggestion....i think you have the one to do it. But if you're looking for an excuse to get another barrel you might want to consider the 25-06 barrel.

Make sure you read up on all the issues of accurizing tha Handi before you write the 243 off.  Some are a bit more particular than others, just make sure you try different bullets, powders, andf bullet weights as well.

Most 243's and 223's seem to favor the lighter bullets, such as the 85-95gr bullets in the 243.  The Federal Fusion has shown some real promise.

Keep at it.

By the way, it wasn't a dumb question.  A LOT of dealers don't know the difference.  I've heard them tell customers that all the frames are shotgun frames.  Some have also tried to tell people that you have to send it back to the factory EVERY TIME you want to switch barrels that have already been fitted.

Glad I was there to set them straight.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Handi is right, there are no dumb questions..... and the .243 can be made to shoot real well, it's just a matter of the time usually and a little elbow grease on the bore and trying one of the many loads that have been shown to be very accurate in them....

panman:

Don't overlook the 95 Nosler/Winchester bullets...they are called Combined Technologies Ballistic Silver Tips...and are built a little different than the regular Nosler Ballistic tips...the jacket is a little thicker and they have a better base to them so they should work great on animals.Reloader 22 is a good powder to use...I shot those strings as fast as I could...and you'll see even with the barrel heated up...there really wasn't a-lot of stringing...al-beit..I could have done much better if I had taken my time...
