I just got a new ruger 22/45 today from gander mountain since they were on sale.  It is blued has the heavy 4" target barrel and the plastic grips.  Right after I brought it home I started looking for wooden replacement grips for it.  Even though I haven't shot it yet I just don't like the look of the plastic grips and would like to replace then with some wooden ones.  I looked around on the internet for wooden replacement grips, but couldn't find any.  Does anyone know if I can get wooden grips for this gun and where I can find them?  Also since I am pretty unfamiliar with the gun I would appreciate any advice from anyone who is experience with them.  Any tricks for getting them to shoot better, breaking down and cleaning, brand of ammo.  Thanks.

There are no "grips" per say.  The "panels" you see are actually all integral to the entire lower grip frame.  It's all one piece.  I've seen some where these areas were saned down with a dremel and replaced with some altered 1911 grip panels though.  Of course you'd need some sort of threaded ectucheon in the plastic to attach the new panels with.
  For takedown and re-assembly, it can be awkward the first couple times but it comes easy after that.  Amm...try a bunch of diffeent brands and see what you particular gun likes the best.  Mine liks Federal.  Yours may differ.

Crudders32:  Most firearm modifications are performance driven.  While I understand your need to personalize your Ruger, having NOT fired the weapon, does not give you much data (experience) to know what needs to be changed.  Get out and fire that thing! :grin:

The owner of the 22/45 did some fairly extensive (but not technically complex) grip modifications so that the pistol would accept most 1911-style grip panels.

There were lots of other mods, utilizing some different firearms finish products, etc.

Not really my kind of project, but I DID thoroughly enjoy watching someone spending some time on a rimfire project besides the usual "how much can I spend on my 10/22?" (Flame suit on, and yes, I'm in the middle of a 10/22 build myself. :oops:)

Broken Gun Ranch does some cool mods on the MKIIs and 22/45s. They will do a grip modification using Pearce Grip rubber finger grooves and 1911 grip panels. http://www.brokengunranch.com
