IMR 4895 and Winchester Short Mag heavey bullet loads???
« on: August 31, 2005, 12:45:53 PM »
I am a strong advocate of the IMR 4895 powder.  I find that it will give me the best accuracy in my rifle loads.  I use it for my 165 gr. gameking for my 300 WSM.

However, when I wanted to work up a load for a 200 & 220 gr Sierra bullets, there was no receipe for the IMR 4895 powder.  I noticed that there were no receipes for any bullets over the 165 gr.  Now I know that the military uses this powder for their match rounds (????).

Does anyone out there have some data for the IMR 4895 above the 165 gr bullet ceiling?  I am at the point that I am thinking of getting with Accurate and seeing if they can help.  Thought I would ask here first.

Thanks!

I'm sure it'll give fine accuracy in short mags with heavy bullets, but you're not going to see very high velocities. You'll run into pressure limits before you get the speeds you would expect out of a magnum. If you are content with 30-06 speeds or maybe a bit more, then by all means use 4895. There isn't any published data because most folks buying those rifles do so because they are really fast. To work up a load, pick the bullet you want, pick a starting load for the heaviest bullet you have listed, back it off maybe 20%, and work up slowly over a chronograph watching for pressure signs. When the bolt lift gets sticky, brass flowing into the ejector hole, etc. you know you're over a safe limit. Go back down a couple of grains. Velocity will fall where it may.

The 4895 powders are not really suitable for bullets over 168 grains in your 300 wsm...

Thanks guys for the responses.  I still don't understand, when I load up rounds for my .25 WSSM and the 300 WSM I get faster velocities from the 4895 then IMR 4350 or 4831.  The accuracy is better for the 4895 then the others.  I can get close with the 4831 for the 220 gr bullets.  I will use the 165 gr as my standard round for my area.  I just wanted to make up some heavier rounds for big game hunting, if I get lucky and get the chance.

As for the undocumented loads.  I don't want to go into virgin territories with new loads.  I am a little nervous doing that.  Give some directions and I am fine.  Not much of an explorer.
