Where do you hunt deer?
« on: October 16, 2005, 06:39:28 AM »
Hey everyone.  Just found this part of the site and was wondering what part of PA all of you hunt in.  I live in 2B, but I go up to my uncles camp in 2F for the first day of deer, and go the rest of the season down in 2B.  I'm just curious about the size of the deer you're seeing where you are.  These new laws actually seem to be working.  One of my friends just got a 200lb. 9 point with a 16.5" spread.  Another friend saw a 10 point but couldnt get it in close enough for a shot with his bow.  I have a feeling this is gonna be a good year for big bucks.  Good luck this deer season.

Hi!
Live & hunt mostly in tiny 2E, right out the back door! Have to do some scouting, look for a new area. No comment about the new deer reg. but last evening was the first deer I've seen in 2 years, haven't taken one in 3 years either. There is a lot of posted property around here any more. People from Pittsburgh are scarfing up the land & posting it. Had one guy tell a neighbor & I he "doesn't want any GD hunters on his land" (203 acres)
nice guy!  :x

Was in the tree stand with my T/C PA Hunter carbine (I love that gun!) had a doe & 2 little ones come late. It was just too dark to make a good shot on her. Will be waiting for her on Monday!!
I've never taken a deer with the muzzleloader yet & I'm excited about it!!

They keep adding more and more posted land around here too.  It's starting to get pretty annoying seeing those everywhere you go.  Good luck with that doe.  I was going to get a bow and a muzzleloader this year and didn't get around to either so I have to wait till the first day of rifle season.

I hunt in 4E, mostly on the same farm I've hunted for over 35 years. This season will be the last however because the farm has been sold, effective in Dec. Although we have had much success, last year the deer seemed scarce and so far this year they seem non-existant. This doe eradication process has got to stop! I read where license sales are off by 12% compared to the same time last year. We all know who to thank for that.

We can live with the antler restrictions but around here the archers have 6 weeks to harvest the best bucks while we black powder shooters can only take doe. And, in case you haven't seen next years proposals, the doe elimination continues with another concurrent buck & doe rifle season.

I don't know the situation statewide but here we have a bumper crop of acorns. Should be a good winter for the few remaining deer, God bless 'em.

"This doe eradication process has got to stop!"

In areas were hunters concentrate and do not practice limited harvest it will look that way.  Then add the level of people posting land and limiting access, more concentration of hunters again.

Where I hunt in the Bald Eagle it is evident that few hunters are hunting the whole week.  On top of that few scout or go in as far as they use too in the past.  Walk in a mile or two and the whole area is different.  Many more signs of deer and many more deer sightings.  Ten years ago, most hunters drove back in and hunted all day.  Now most just go 2 or 3 hundred yards from the road.  I guess they don't want to scratch the suv, plus there made of plastic anyway.

The deer management areas and doe tag plan needs to be improved.  I think that the areas are too large and do not address the problem herd areas.  Plus they need to come up with incentives or disincentives for large land owners who post for no reason.  But land owners have rights to.  The state needs to come up with a managed hunt on all state properties that are big enough.  Close some city parks for a day or two, register a few hunters and have a hunt.

Pressure and no way to control the harvest in an area make for some large pockets of thin deer herds, (ie: state game lands).

Happy hunting and good luck on getting a deer this season. Dale

I hunt mostly in Washington County in the game lands in Bavington/Burggetstown area, and still see many deer. Also good in Warren County near Tidiute,PA. Erie County in spotty, some farmers have no remorse on them :( McKean County was great when I was younger, not sure anymore. I mostly hunt Warren and Washington lately, all game lands and some National Forest. Jack.

I live on the edge of SGL176 in Centre County and hunt pretty much out my back door.  The SGL is comprised of about 8600 acres, and a lot of it isn't hunted real hard since folks can't drive in with their pickups and FWD's.  Have to drag the durned thing a bit, and they're too lazy.  Plus there is still a lot of public land around here.  I spend a lot of time out in the woods and the deer herds around here seem healthy and decent sized.  They aren't the huge herds I'd gotten used to seeing the last few years; but still healthy.  My Neighbor had no problem during archery, and I"m seeing my share during small game/turkey(lots of turkeys).  I think folks have gotten spoiled over the years, and sorta got used to standing around for a half hour and shooting something; buck or doe.  There's more to think about than just killing a deer; there's the overall health of our forests and the other animals in it.  The deer HAVE been overbrowsing and both the land and the other animals who subsist on the same feed have suffered some for it.  No, I don't work for the Game Commission by the way.  During the summer a friend of mine who is a teacher was taken on a tour with other teachers to 5 sites that the GC had fenced off in the middle of various woods in the area.  The idea was to show teachers, who are often a trifle on the liberal/hunting-is-cruel side, the effects of what can happen when man helps to create an imbalance, and the need to correct that(again) by thinning the herds down.  The fencing had been done 5 years ago, and the average fenced in area was between an acre and five acres..  There were plants growing in those plots that had been considered either extinct or endangered in PA.  We hunters, I believe, are the true conservationists in this country.  I personally feel a tad better knowing the herds are down.  Might have to hunt harder, but then seems like hunting skill, in some cases, went  away with overpopulated deer herds.  Easier to just have a lot of targets.  These are obviously generalizations on my part, and there's probably all sorts of exceptions to the rule....however I don't think exceptions MAKE the rule.  By the way, that teacher, who doesn't hunt,  buys a liscense now to help support our way of life.

I agree, a smaller deer heard with food is a healthier deer heard. Jack.
