Best 22 Centerfire in a Handi?
« on: August 24, 2005, 02:52:34 PM »
OK. The barrel accessory program is too good to pass up, I think.  I haven't even got to fire my NEW 45-70 yet, and am considering sending the receiver away for another barrel.  I have just about everything I need (I know, need is subjective, if you don't have it, you probably NEED it), caliber wise, 35 Remington (3 in all), 270, 308, 30-06, 22 mag(rimfire, but a great shooter), 357 mag, 7.62x39...plenty of shotguns, too.

So, I think I need a fast stepping 22 for varmint type critters, and the like. The question is which one?

I think I like the 223, it's cheapest to shoot.

I like the 22-250, I think it's more versitile, and different.

The 22 Hornet doesn't do too much for me, with my 22mag and 34 grain bullets.

To Flute or not to Flute?

Will the bull barrel fit my current forearm on the 45-70?

Don't want anything smaller in caliber, either.  I like that the 22 cal is very diverse in bullet selection.

Tell me your thoughts and preferences, please.  Thanks

22-250 , been around a long time, my first center fire 22, a great, fast accurate and versatile round..........223 very accurate, tons of ammo and firearms for it. 204, my new sweetheart, fast and exciting, love it's lack of recoil and accuracy. 22 Hornet, just plain fun! ( super accurate ) Own and love them all!

There is nothing wrong with either 223 or 22-250 I suspect I will have a hornet in the next 2 years. But my 204 is shooting like a dream

I'll vote for the 22-250, heavy stainless. I'm having a ball with it.
Solid .75" groups with handloads and there is still room for improvement.
A great gun at a great price.

I vote for the 22 250 also, mainly because the first load I tried in it went less than 1/2". My 223 took what seemed like 10 million different loads before it got down to 1/2". And its alot faster. Digger

I own the .223 and I love it for it's purpose. for it's versitility I would go with the 22-250 Up to deer size game and extended range.
