Huglu Doubles - Any Experience with them???
« Reply #30 on: August 21, 2005, 04:36:49 AM »
Me and my dealer Steve finally got together on it this past week. I'm getting the Bobwhite SxS .410 double, straight stock and double triggers like I wanted for $729 out the door. Should be in next week.

I believe with the Bobwhite there is only one length available in .410. I think I recall it's 26" but am not positive of that. Will post a new thread on it when it comes in next week. I'll likely have it by mid week.

Myronman, this is the one I'm getting:

I like the straight grip and double triggers better myself than the Ringneck with the pistol grip and single trigger like you mentioned you're looking at.

Will try to post a few pics of mine when I get it home.

i noticed the stock and the difference in the trigger(s).  it seems that there is only one grade available?    from what i can tell the only weak link is the wood, though i have seen some for sale online that seem to have beautiful stocks.  most seem rather plain.

the problem where i live is that these guns are not readily available to look over.   there is a shop where i grew up that may well handle these.  i aint going down there until the end of september and if i wait that long i will have lost some good hunting already.    but we will see.  things are starting to move pretty fast around here.

o.k. guys.    i am going to stop complicating this,  i am pretty much settled on the c.z.   i am thinking on getting the 410 and maybe even getting a 20.

i was going to spend 1600 on the dog, but found a guy that that has a good dog he will sell me for 500, but i get to do the training whereas the 1600 dog was trained.   long story short,  i now have more coin for gun.   :P

but a side by side or o/u.  or should i say woodcock or ringneck?  the thing of it is i have never shot either,  i guess i most likely will go with the side by side just because it is different from what most folks have.

You'll find more folks with serious money using SxSs then O/Us but folks of all means use both. In the circles most of us can afford to run in you'll see fewer nice SxSs than nice O/Us. For a person used to pumps or semiautos the O/U will likely be a bit easier to adjust to as you still have a single sighting plane rather than the broad double plane of a SxS. I like both. The CZ actually Huglu guns are quite nice and for the money outstanding values. I might go see if my dealer has my Bobwhite tomorrow. But then I need to go check on my new tractor tomorrow as well and that's in a different direction.

Interesting thread since I have been looking at these also.  This is what I have found.

Huglo SxS with pistol grip stock, single trigger, choke tubes, case colored receiver (not sure of the model).  The dealer had them in 12, 20 and 410 gauge for $999.  This dealer is usually $100-150 dollars higher than anyone else.  Don't know how he can sell guns at MSRP even though he is the only dealer in a very small town.

CZ (Huglo) SxS, looks like the same gun described above.  $800.  This dealer is usually $50-80 higher than anyone else.  They only have the 12 gauge and have not gotten any other gauges yet.

My fear is this.  I want a SxS but do not have a bundle to spend.  I bought a Baikal last year at it was a POS.  Did not shoot to Point of Aim and really did not have a pattern.  Now I agree with all that these Huglo guns look well made.  But the Baikal I had looked well enough made to serve my purpose (squirrel hunting).  I would like to hear from someone who has actually patterned one of these Huglos.  I do not need another inexpensive SxS that looks well make but will not pattern well enough to kill a squirrel at 20 yards.

So has anyone patterened one of these Huglo's?

No I haven't and when I pick mine up, hopefully tomorrow if I can find time to get up there, I won't then either. I do not really believe in patterning shotguns. If you wish more understanding of why I suggest you read Bob Brister's book.

Now for a squirrel hunter who uses a shotgun, I don't, patterning would have some validity I do agree. But when I shoot a shotgun it's at flying feathered game mostly. Maybe a rabbit or for sure clay targets. They all have one thing in common. Motion, they are flying. A static pattern means nothing regarding what it will do on flying targets.

When I buy a shotgun I shoot it at flying targets. Me and it either work together and clay targets break and feathered game dies or we don't. If we don't it goes and I get another.

But John Barness feels some differently I guess. I read a review by him long before CZ got involved. Seems he and his wife really love the Huglus and does feel they pattern nicely and also work well on flying targets.

Remington bought out Baikal and is calling the model made by them the Spartan;  Mossberg has the Kahn calling it the Silver Reserve.  Does anybody else have one made overseas and calling it something else.  How do these compare with the Huglu or is it apples and oranges?

Don't think Remington bought the company, they are just importing guns made by Baikal under the Spartan label. I've heard nothing of any ownership interest. That would be quite unusual an arrangement if they did.

Khan doesn't make guns. Like CZ they import guns made by Huglu. So the Huglu CZs and Huglu Khan's are pretty much the same. Minor cosmetic differences only.

I picked up my CZ Huglu Bobwhite .410 today. Very nicely done Fit and finish is quite nice. Fit is a bit too tight as is usual for guns in this price range. I'll likely use a little JB Bore Paste to loosen it up just a wee bit before firing it. Wood is plain grain turkish walnut.

The Baikals and Spartans are just not even in the same league as the Huglus imported by CZ or by Khan. But Khan is Huglu so should be pretty much equal to the CZ.

I have to believe that patterning is important.  If a shotgun throws a pattern like my Baikal did, you could put three or four doves (or skeet) in the pattern and miss them.  I understand what you are saying that with the string of shot and a flying obeject the target should eventually get hit, but I still do not like a pattern with big holes in it.
