Hornady .30-'06 bullets for moose
« on: August 28, 2005, 07:46:17 AM »
Would the Hornady 180 grain BTSP, at 2500 FPS, be enough for Moose, or would I be better off with a heavier, 190, or 220 grain bullet, in a .30-'06 rifle? I know that bullet placement is everything, but am looking for a stopping round.

I saw a moose take several shots THRU the heart and 1 in the neck before it dropped.A 30-06 and a 7mm mag were used! Another moose dropped from a single shot from a 35 Reminton contender. A family in Maine has taken 2 moose in 2 years with 3 shots from a 30-06 with 180 grain bullets First shot on all these animals was over 100 yards, but under 150. The hornady bullet should be great moose medicine.

I have never kilt a moose in my life.  But if I was going hunting for one with a 30-06, I'd be loaded with a 200gr or 220gr bullet.  I would think a 200gr NP or Grand Slam would work good.

That Hornady bullet will certainly do but I would use the 190 SPBT.  I have to ask why only 2500 fps? I get 2670 with the 180 SPBT out of a 20" barreled '06, 2730 outof 22" barrels and 2790 fps out of 24" barrels. With H4831SC I get 2750 with the 190 SPBT in 24" barrels. All are safe loads.
