What Brand Bullet Puller to Get?
« on: May 11, 2005, 04:54:28 AM »
Gents,

I'm looking to get a kinetic-type bullet puller and wanted to get some recommendations on which brands work well and which ones to stay away from for disassembling loaded cases.

Thanks in advance.

Don't do it.  For a few dollars more you can get the Hornady cam-loc bullet puller.  It is faster, easier and just plain better all around.

I have both a kinetic puller and an RCBS collet puller, the problem with the RCBS is you need to buy a collet for each bullet diameter. I like the collet puller cuz you can pull the bullet without spilling the powder, so they both have their advantages. I also found that the collet puller may not pull bullets that have been heavily crimped as in the 45-70, and needed the kinetic puller to break the crimp.

Ditto quickdtoo   8)

Same here - have both and both are needed.  The collet type are GREAT for not hurting the bullet and not spilling the powder!!! :D

What kind of bullets and loads do you anticipate pulling? If you're using a crimp, the puller probably won't do you any good?

i say
do what the three of us did
if your saving $$ start with the kenetic
then down the line get the other puller an start collecting collets

i got the kenetic one from rcbs with the universal chuck in it an its nice but it tosses the powder every were in ther  but for adjusting dies an such it sure is nice

or just when you are pulling one or two its easyer
but when you have a lot of work thats when the die puller is best

If you're just going to use to to fix the occasional mistake get a kinetic. But if you're going to be pulling hundreds or thousands of bullets get a collet or cam lock puller.

If you get the Hornady cam-loc you can get 1 collet and use it for that specific caliber bullet PLUS one bullet size smaller and bigger.  I have mine on one of my RCBS turrets so all I do is rotate the turret to be set up for bullet pulling.  Nothing is faster than the puller on a turret press.

just for info, on the kinetic pullers the rubber band that holds the 3 alum. pieces togather will ware and break, I went to the local hardware store found the right size and bought a dz. They seem to break just as your getting started to pull a bunch and the store is closed.
I have both the RCBS and kinetic and have been known to have to do a bunch of pulling.

I do not use the case holder that came with mine. I use the correct shell holder for the case it is faster and works just as good.

Thanks for the input gents. The shekels are a tad tight for the foreseeable future so I was thinking of going kinetic for now since I am mainly looking for something to salavage unprimed rounds generated during setup of my seating die and the occasional boo-boo   . Since I don't normally crimp, those collet pullers sound pretty dandy and a bit more tidy, might just pick one up when I have some extra coin.

Thought I'd give some feedback and thanks for the advice you gents proffered earlier. I went with the Hornady Cam-lock puller (I don't crimp most of my loads) and what a slick tool. Took some figuring and common sense (directions given are not all that explicit) but 5 minutes later I was pulling bullets with "gleeful ease". No damage to bullets or case and powder is easily salvaged as you gents noted. Glad I spent the extra shekels though a couple other Hornady collets for my other calibers and a Kinetic will need to be obtained somewhere down the line since I can see some occasional uses for a kinetic puller as well.

Regards.

stuff some rag or some foam in the kinetic puller to protect the pointed bullet tips when they pop free

I would go for the collet puller even if the "...shekels are tight..."

I had a kinetic puller, and within one summer the rubber o-ring that holds the fingers together dried up and separated on me.  I could have saved the money on the kinetic puller and put it towards a collet puller.  Hindsight being 20-20, going with the collet puller would have been cheaper.  I think the collet is safer also - I have never liked having to "whack" loaded ammunition onto the wood bench or concrete floor to remove the bullet.

I've used the Quinetics kinetic bullet puller for years and am quite happy with it.  I don't usually have all that many bullets to pull.  If I did I might change my mind.  The key to the Quinetics is to stuff some cotton in the nose to absorb the shock of the hit.  My older one had an opening in the side which I quickly applied duct tape to.  There's a knack involved in getting the bullet out of the puller without spilling the powder, but one learns it quickly enough.  Considering it handles all calibers without additional parts it's quite economical.  Just one mans opinion.  Best wishes.

I use an RCBS kinetic puller (one collet).  Works well and haven't lost any bullets or powder yet.  I had to use it yesterday actually, when a .30-30 case buckled when I loaded the bullet.  Two whacks and I've got my components to reuse.

One more vote for the Hornady cam-lock. Faster than the other collets, save the little forster doo-hickeys, but they don't come in 45 cal.

If you have a turret, or LNL inserts, they're as fast as a kinetic type, and less mess too.  It might even be worth it to buy a lee hand press and leave the cam-lock puller set up in it. Some say they don't work well with lead bullets, but mine works fine on 45 colt 200 gr lead rnfp's.
