Author Topic: Just got new Marlin 917VSF (Read 1151 times)

Well Yesterday i went and picked up my new Marlin 917VSF. When i was at the store i also got a new Bushnell 3200 3-9x40 (with Rainguard). I am not mounting this scope on my Marlin though. At the moment i have a Tasco 6-24x42 mounted on it. You guys can expect a full range report from me some time this morning or afternoon.

I live in BC.

I shot my Marlin yesterday and it shot allright. It was shooting real tight groups but there was a flyer in each group. My 4 shot group average at 50 yards was .4 and at 100 my 4 shot group average was .65. The flyer at 50 yards was usually about 3/4 of an inch away and the flyer at 100 was usually about 2" away. Other than that is shot great.

i have the same rifle and it will lose those fliers with about 200 shots or so through it.

mine now shoots five shots into less than an inch at 100 yards.

just go shoot it more and enjoy it and watch the groups shrink. mine likes remingtons, federals, and hornady. it hates CCI TNT's for some reason.

maybe try changing to a few different ammos and see if it helps.

Thanks Matt and hopefully you are right about it shooting better after 200 rounds. Right now i have about 100 rounds through it.

A friend of mine has a 917VS .17HMR it shoot 3/4" groups. But the trigger is just awful at 61oz. Has anybody done any trigger work on this rifle.
It seams the trigger return spring pulls 42oz by itself. I am going to start by snipping a coil off this spring and see.

Any suggestions.

I have by changing it to a lighter pen spring, but it was still lacking. Shimming will achieve a lighter, but safe trigger, also. I went with the Rifle Basix drop in trigger in both of my 917V and 917VS.....The RB gives you adjustment and a steel trigger, but will cost $66 at Midsouth.

If I get it down to 35oz that will do. The young fellow has strong fingers.
I have some springs and lots of shims, that I think will work.

Replaced the two springs with lighter ones an got it to 38oz. This is one strange trigger with a very complex geometry. Never seen one like it. The two springs I replaced were so tightly wound they would hardly move.

For myself I would not have a trigger like that, good grief Marlin has been making rifles for a long time and they know better than that.

Someone lost a lot of sleep with this action and trigger design.

You think that's bad, the earlier pre 2004 version, the 17V(S), had a bit different design, but had a terrible safety with detents in the side of the action!! At least the T900 trigger improved the safety mechanism.

I have to agree with quickdtoo on the trigger mods. The Rifle Basix triggers are great. I have them in both of my 17s.
