Breech Plug Nightmare
« on: May 28, 2005, 01:02:20 PM »
Hey,
Took the Huntsman to the range yesterday and shot about 25 assorted sabots to try and work up some loads.  Using Pyrodex P and the nightmare began as soon as I got home and attempted to remove the BreechPlug.  No Way Jose was that plug coming out especially with that &#%#$^ breechplug tool.  I even have it mounted in a socket and still no movement.  Soaked it with CLP Break Free overnight but nothing.  Poured Boiling water down the barrel and let it sit, nothings.  Finally removed the scope and placed breech area into a pot of boiling water for about 10 minutes, rushed to the basement and got everything mounted in a vise.  Just about to give up when it finally broke free.
That's the end of Pyrodex for me.  Have a lot of 777 ffg on hand and was just using the Pyrodex in the Huntsman but thats all over now.  I think I will also try the 25 ACP Breech Plug some of you have got, only with 777.  As they say in the JDL "Never Again" Pyrodex.

T7 made the breech plug stick worse  for me as it is
sugar based and the fowling becomes very hard.
Loosening the plug a turn or two at the range while
rifle is still warm does the trick.I use antiseize tape
now and after 70 or 80 shots, the plug comes out as
easily as it went in.I find it hard to beleive that
Pyrodex would make a plug stick worse than T7.
I do use the 25 acp plug as it is cleaner in the breech
face area and also gives a hex drive to work with.
Just my experience with a sidekick.YMMV.

Breech Plug

Hey Gary,
I usually use the Teflon tape on all my Breech Plugs but, I have not shot the Huntsman in a while so it just had Slick 50 grease on the plug.  I also shot two Whites, one in .50 and the other .45 and have always gottten the plug out easlily with the tape and grease.  Went to the PR site to look at the plugs and the cost.  Seems a little high especially if I am not going to use the Huntsman a lot.  Might stay with the plug as is but stick with 777 which I have had no problems with.  Thanks for your input. Have a great Memorial Day.

Yea,I wouldn't spend the money on it if not going to
shoot the rifle alot either.I'm surprised that my plug comes
out as easily as it does with no grease, just the tape.
I do wrap the tape over the end so it seals up
the barrel and that seems to work.
You have a wonderful holiday as well :D

I tried the pink teflon tape and had problems . I couldn't get the plug in tight enough and the action would break open when shooting . I bought a tube of Tetra Grease and have had no problems since with the 777 .

I solved the problem by welding a nut to the end of the plug and use an air impact wrench. I am surprised that no one has used the impact wrench....

Black Mag' 3 solved my plug and cleaning problems.  I like it much better than 777fff and it has better velocity too.  It is CLEAN and the plug comes out very easy,

Your pole may perform different,

Agree with the BM3.Just wish it wasn't so expensive
to order(not available locally).As much as I shoot,it's
just too expensive to shoot all the time.

bjgolfnut,

I had the same exact nightmare as you and that was with using TC grease. Through the suggestions of other members I switch to "Copper Anti-Seize" designed to handle high heat and is sold at your local Napa or some other auto parts houses. Also it was suggested while shooting to crack loose the breech plug after a half dozen shots and retighten. Since making the changes I have had no other problems to speak of. 8)

I to have in the past had this problem. I have also corrected it for many shooters.
First start with a clean barrel, specifically the theads and the breech plug itself. I mean spotlessly clean, this is a ground zero starting point. I have used many different greases, tapes and even crisco to try to stop the breech plug from welding itself into the  barrel. I like gorilla Grease form T/C, but any good grease preferably a high temp grease as TOGO suggested.

Now, there is no reason to put the breech plug in with a 6ft extension at the end of your biggest breakerbar. Doing so is only looking for trouble. Snug is good.

I personally clean my barrel, at the range, after every three shots and remove the breech plug and clean after every 20 shots. I have yet to have a problem with removing the breech plug from any of my black powder guns regardless of the propellant used.
For me a black powder rifle is a tool to allow me to hunt more/longer. I do not shoot it for recreation. I will take it out every year and shoot 10-20 rounds to be sure its still zeroed from last season, but thats about it.

try it, I'll bet it will solve your breech plug woes!!

 Good luck,
