300 win to 300 H&H
« on: September 02, 2005, 04:44:38 AM »
Has anyone chambered or changed the chamber of a 300 win to 300 H&H?  Is it possible.  Thinking of doing so wit a winchester model 70?  Thank  You!

It will not work as the 300 H&H is more tapered than the 300 Win Mag.  You would also have to be sure the Win M70 could accommodate the longer 300 H&H round.  If so, then you could make a 300 H&H Improved which would be something like an 8mm Rem Mag necked down to .308".  There is probably a named wildcat cartridge that matches such a configuration, 300 Ackley Long or 300 Ackley Magnum?  Or there is the 300 Weatherby Magnum.

Already been done and readily available.  It’s called the .300 Weatherby Magnum.  The best/most versatile .30 caliber magnum made.  How many other .30 caliber factory magnum cartridges let you use another should the need arise?  Lawdog

I second the Lawdog. My M70 in .300 Wby. Mag. (originally chambered in H&H) is hand's down my favorite rifle... and I can shoot H&H ammo through it.

No go on the 300 Win to 300 H&H. You'll need to rebarrel for it. Why would you want to go downhill in performance?
If you want to go to the 300 Weatherby, you'll need a Long Action rifle; it won't work with the standard length action the 300 Win was developed for.

I want a 300 h&h and can't find one.  I already have a 300 win and 300 rem ultra mag.  So that why I want to know can I make this change over if so what do i need to do.  If all I have to do is change the barrel than so be it.  So can this work?  Thank You! :D

Make sure I got this correct.  If I bought a 300 weatherby I can also shoot 300 h&h though it as well?

NO, not really. Yeah I suppose you "could" do it to fireform the cases to the Weatherby configuration. But performance would be reduced a good deal and accuracy would be who knows what.

If you want a .300 H&H get one. BUT be sure the Winchester action is long enough FIRST. I think it is but am not sure.

You sure can and without that much loss in performance or accuracy.  I have been doing it ever since 1963 and know many, many other .300 Weatherby shooters that do the same thing.  I also shoot .375 H&H ammo in my .375 Weatherby Magnum.  Same thing as shooting other standard cartridges through Ackley Improved versions.  I own both .300 H&H and .300 Weatherby and .375 H&H and .375 Weatherby and what tiny loss in performance that is lost no game animal is ever going to know about it.  Being able to use H&H ammo is one of the advantages that you get with the .300 & .375 Weatherby’s.  Also saves on brass costs too.  Lawdog

I've been sticking my hand in an alligator's mouth since 1986 but I know that sooner or later they're gonna call me lefty.

I have seen those "you can shoot X in Y" info posters before and I did not see the two that were mentioned.  I would have to believe that there is a reason why.

Nothing new to add... just seconding Lawdog's assertion. I shoot .300H&H ammo quite accurately out of my .300 Weatherby. Of course you can forgt the idea about reloading those H&H casings as they will have expanded to fit the more shouldered Weatherby chambering. But it does not affect bullet performance in any significant way.
