This is my first time in the big bore section. Anyway a friend of a relative has a Savage .458 Win mag he is willing to part with. I don't need it but y'all know how it is. I have not seen the rifle buthave been told it is NIB never fired or mounted. The guy bought it for that someday hunt up north but now is dealing with stage 3 lung cancer. He is asking $500 or trade  for it and I cannot find any reference to a Savage in this caliber. The price seems steep to me for a Savage. I sure hope some of y'all will enlighten me before I get to have it in my hands.

oh my.. just found them on a web site. MSRP over $1000 and best retail $899. Is this a good thing or is somebody blowing smoke up my skirt? :eek:

None of my business, but what exactly are you going to hunt with that thing around these parts?  I'd guess that the .458 is not going to be a fun gun to shoot much, will give you a good beating,  and be terribly expensive to feed..........In my mind, if I were going to spend the money on a rifle, I'd rather find a rifle more suitable for game or target shooting around here.........If your interested in a big bore, a 45.70 or 444 is more than enough for around here.......

For $500 it sounds like a good way of getting into a .458 just to see what it's all about.  Some folks down load them a bit for bison and moose. That supposedly takes a lot of the "ouch" out of them.

Maybe you can pick it up at a good price or make a trade and later you can move it  for something that  makes a better fit in your collection.

That's what I'm thinking. It would make a good trade. It's also a decent time in history to experiment with these because bigbores are pretty popular now and you should be able to sell it reasonably quickly.

Actually you can load it down to 45-90 standards for low recoiling loads.

The case length for .458 Win Mag is 45- 2.5" and the 45-90 is 45-2.4" and is basicly a belted 45-95 by case measurement  :roll:  because a 45-100 is 45-2.6" and your cases are cheaper than mine.

Quite a bit of good data to use here... don't let the nay sayers change your mind if you want it.

All I have to say is, "What the heck are you waiting for?"  Why haven't you already bought it?  The recoil isn’t all the bad with the .458 Winchester.  The .458 Winchester is a very versatile cartridge.  Reloading is the answer.  Down load it to .45-70 or lower velocities or up to the level of Dangerous Game it’s enjoyed for many years.  And yes the .458 Winchester can be loaded up to that “magical 5,000 fpe. level".  Hodgdon posts a load of 75.5 gr. of H335 for 2,163 fps. using a 500 gr. Hornady RN bullet.  That translate to 5,194 fpe., unless my calculator is giving me bad information.  Tell you what, if you don’t want it for $500.00 someone else will(like me for instance).  Everyone “NEEDS” a big bore in their safe.  You can never tell when a T-Rex will invade your neighborhood.   :eek:   Lawdog

volshooter, I would say just buy it, but I would add, don't bother if you don't want the recoil. I personally don't believe in downloading. If you need to routinely download, you  probably needed a lesser cartridge to begin with. Plus, you could have gotten a lighter, faster handling gun to boot. If a guy want's blackpowder velocities, there are lots of guns out there, and most will have much better re-sale value than any Savage.

Been watching the posts, thanks cats. I don't need this rifle, but I figure I'm getting it for half price. Now that is a good thing anytime. I hunted whitetail, black bear and boar for years using a Marlin 45/70 with dad-gum fine results. I know I can down load the 458 down for our less than lethal game. My current centerfire lineup is, .223, 7.62x39, .30/.30, 25-06, 30-06, .308, 6.5x55, and .300 WBY. I got speed covered. I think I got about everything covered. My question is .....is this a good deal or not?? I'm not scared of recoil, I shoot several hundred Remington 3 inch slugs a year cause a pal of mine can get for me free. I reload 100% of my ammo and don't see any huge jump loading the .458. This rifle has a MSRP over $1000 and I can get it for half. Maybe i'll load it down to 45/70 numbers and have a fine rifle for local game, maybe I will just keep it and trade for something I don't have....cannot imagne what that could be. Cuz is on his way to pick up the rifle for me to look at, back in 48 hours.

Buy it!  I believe you will be pleasantly surprised at how much fun a .458 can be to shoot, if the stock fit you well, and the rifle is heavy enough. :D

I would buy it myself. Nothing wrong with owning a good big bore. I own all kinds of rifles and big bore rifles and I live in a Shotgun only State. You never know when you go on a hunting trip and would need one.

Held the Savage, love it. Dude that owns it needs some work done. I think a few days of labor is the finial deal for the .458. Cat also has a Winchester in .416. Perhaps he needs something else done. This guy bought several big bores from a guy who wanted to thin out his collection. He now needs to thin his out, mine needs to be fattened.

Bought the Savage .458 WM outright, still gonna help this dude with his project. I got a NIB stainless rifle w/ muzzle brake and 40 factory rounds. He still has a .416 Rem Mag on a Winchester frame to get rid of. I plan on loading the .458 down to closer to 45/70 ballistics for hunting east TN varmits. His last rifle is a .375 H&H mag on a REM 700 frame. May get it too. He has guns but no tallent, I need guns and have plenty tallent. Tally HO.

I shot one just the other day with the 500gr bullet going 2150 and it didn't kick to much it was like a hard push. :D

Up date, I have owned the beast, Savage Safari Express .458 Win mag SS with adjustable muzzle brake for a few days now. This is a beautiful rifle that fits me very good. I shot a box of factory full loads and did not find the recoil unacceptable. I would not want to take it to the range and shoot 50 rounds out of it for sure, I'm not that tough. Yep, the bug has bit, I have bought dies, brass, bullets and it is on. I don't intend loading full house loads 500grs, but have invested in 350 & 400 gr bullets. Speer has some fine loads for the 400's, not arm breakers but stiff. There is a good chance I may use this rifle for local game. Sure it is bigger than I need but dang, I love that womp. Dude is on hold with his last rifle, I got it wrong it is a .416 Rem mag on a Winchester that he has left. A good bud is wanting it if he gets better, chemo is rough. Thanks guys.
