Worked up the 44 loads from the starting point for H4227 and a 300 XTP. Went to 19.5 grains of powder and got 3 shots touching with 2 shots an inch high at 100 yards. Looks promising. The other loads lower than that were about 3 inches in regular patterns like five pointed stars. Once it is fouled, I LOVE MY 44 HANDI!!!!

I only shot one group of 5 with each load of powder so I will go back and retest.

Shot my 7-08 Remington 700 with 160 Sierra Game Kings and one load went 3 shots into .72 inches (3 shot groups). Seems to like 150 NBT and 160 SGK. I had a great day at the range. Learned two things: don't try to crimp bottleneck cartridges with bullets with no cannelure (didn't work too well on some 150 SMK's that I found, don't ask) and when it is 100 degrees/100% humidity you will have the range all to yourself.

What velocities were you getting with the 160gr loads from the 7-08?

John Linebaugh tells people that are having an accuracy problem with his revolvers to add more powder (usually) to tighten their groups!

You also (may have) learned that a Rem' Model 700 is usually one heck of a shooter. They can be Very Hard to beat. Have you tuned the trigger? See: www.centerfirecentral.com for Model 700 trigger-tuning instructions. The Model 700 IS tuneable without a Timney, etc.

I don't know what the velocity is on the 160 softpoints. I don't have a chronograph, sorry.

I took the trigger pull down to 3.5 lbs without touching the sear or the other one (overtravel?) I just read the instructions, it was when I first got the rifle back from Remington. I originally purchased the rifle in August of 2003. I have returned it 3 times to Remington AND the VX-2 that was on it failed on the last return from the factory. All told I have fired about 450 rounds in a gun that patterned until now. New gun, repaired scope from Leupold, and 2 years of work have gotten me to the .75 inch mark. I am VERY happy now. I was surprised that the 139 Hornady didn't shoot very well except with a max load of BLC-2, though. As it stands, the Sierra Game King and the Nosler BT are both inexpensive bullets, so I am a happy man this week.

i've seen a few Rem's that were NO problem at all with tuning. i have a friend who has probably quit buying Browning's now that he's had a couple of Model 700's that i've reworked for him. Trigger tuning and eliminating the movement of the action/barrel in the stock is all that's needed.

(i've also done the metal work on the triggers of three Ruger M77/MkII's with the info' from Centerfirecentral.com and have had good results with those.)

BUT, to get a good rifle for varmint shooting, and many of the deer hunting situations I've either seen or read about, a Handi' is very hard to beat. I know, in Ohio they're not legal deer medicine, but they sure do a Great Job on Ohio varmints! And the places i've hunted deer in West Virginia are well covered by toting a Handi'. A .280 Rem' or a .270 Win' in a Handi will take care of all that W. Va. has to offer.....including some of those BIG black bear.....for under $260 at Wal Mart! What more needs be said?
