I sent my 1997 Whitetails Unlimited version of the Handi in 45/70 in to have some more barrels fitted. One was a .270. Customer service called me and said, "no can do because it was made before 1999". In fact, she said, "no high powered calibers, only the 22/250, .357, .44 mag and 30/30".

Why can something as powerful as a 45/70 now not even hold a .243 barrel?

I'm sure quickdtoo will give me the answer :grin:

That is stated on the accessory barrel page and has to do with liability for the high pressure calibers and the pre-'99 production. It applies to all the asterisked barrels. IIRC '99 is when they changed the SB2 frames heat treatment...I think.

Take a look at the max average SAAMI pressures between the 45-70 and the .243, .270, you'll see why.

Yes Tim, I'm a dope. You did. I even read that on their site, but I didn't know the reason behind the difference in frames.

Still I wonder, if that old frame can handle at .45/70 wallop, why couldn't it handle a measly .243 or .270?

Anyhoo, I'm having them fit the .30/30 and some shotgun barrels.

Wow, now I see! I'll be honest, I've hunted and shot all my life but I've never handloaded or shot anything other than factory ammo.

Tommy - You're gonna love that 30-30 barrel, good for all uses from small game to elk. It's a handloader's dream in a single shot and the Handi 30-30's are very accurate. Call them back and change the shotgun barrels to a 223 bull 22" or 24", another notoriously accurate Handi barrel and cheap to shoot. The 20 ga. Ultra Slug is another fine one to have but the ammo is quite expensive, somewhere around $2 a pop. Oh, and if they have a .357 mag barrel get it too, good resale value or you can easily ream it to the 357 Maximum for great performance with the big bulletss on the game I mentioned earlier. I'm gonna PM ya with some other info I know about too.
