Use the steel rod when you have to, buy a patchworm or make the "Borewacker" for regular use and forget the guide. "Borewacker" is nothing but a length of weedwacker line. Heat the end and flatten it, cut the other end diagonally so it's sharp. Poke the sharp end through a patch slide it to the flattened end and you are good to go. One improvement that makes it a little better is to drill a hole through the end of a .17 cal air rifle pellet and slip it on so it's held by the flat end. It's just right for a .22.
