Darn, I love this site........
« on: September 05, 2005, 01:03:32 PM »
Folks, I just bought my first Handi-rifle in .223 and ended up fitting a Tasco 2-10X42 Mildot scope on it. Okay, I know, a cheap scope, but it only cost me $60 from Natchez Shooter Supply. My Burris bipod will snap right on without any modifications. I can't wait to try out these Nosler 55gr ballistic tip spitzers.

Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks for a great site.

Welcome aboard!! :D  If you're not handloading, I'd recommend the winchester white box 45gr JHP, they're pretty much the gold standard for .223 Handi accuracy, many handloaders have not been able to beat them, just equal em, 1/2moa accuracy is hard to beat!!! The Ultramax reman 40gr Nosler BT also shoot well, some like the Black Hills stuff too, but the WWB is real hard to beat and cheap too at $13 a box of 40 at WM.

Be sure to read all the stickys, there's a lot of info there that will help ya!!

Hi velocity  Welcome

You may find that the rifle does not shoot well with the bi-pod at the sling stud location , handi's are none to be very picky about barrel pressure.

Most of us that use bi-pods have found that it has to be moved to just in front of the pivot point .

The win. white box ammo is a very good place to start , Read the sticky about hand lapping it will make a world of diffrence.

And agine welcom aboard

:D  welcome HiVelocity

I have a .223 ultra handi. Win white box ammo is great ammo. I  reload for everything I own... here is pic of one of my groups from my .223 handi at 100 yards.

Same here HiVelocity, Welcome to Graybeards. It really is a great site with tons of info on many subjects.
I also recomend the 45gr JHP Winchester White Box ammo. I have yet to find a load as accrate as these. I have used several 55gr ammo with spotty accuracy. The Remington UMC's have done ok in the past, with the best I ever got being 3/4" but the usual as 1 1/4"+. The WWB 55gr FMJ's used to shot like crap in my 223 Ultra. But now that I mounted my Bi-Pods closer to the forearm I can actually get a so so group with them-1 1/4". Like I said not great but so so. Better than the 3" I used to get with them :) .
For my 223 (and all are a little different) I sanded the inside of the forearm and floated it using what many here do, the infamous O-ring. Then drilled a small hole about 1/2"+ from the rear of my forearm to mount the Bi-Pod closer to the rear.  It has helped me out a ton using Bi-Pods.

Norseman112: Really nice group. I just got my high profile rings in today and mounted the Tasco 2-10X42. Believe it or not, when I boresighted the scope on my neighbors mailbox [glad she wasn't home......lol!] and peeked through the scope, it was right on. Now to the range next week and see exactly how "on" it is.

Norseman, could you e-mail me some of your favorite .223 handloads for your handi-rifle? (HiVelocity03@aol.com).

Thanks,

John (aka HiVelocity)

My bipod didn't affect my groups size one bit, just raised it........and all I have is the Wally World $40 one. The Choate stock and fore arm is what makes my Handi's shoot the best, and really helps me withrecoil in my 308 and 45-70. I never thot I could shoot one inch groups from the bench with a 45-70 and enjoy it!

HiVelocity

I sent you an email. Now for me to get tight groups I did free float my .223. You may find it will shoot good without it. Mine shot ok without it meaning about 3/4 moa. I free floated mine different than the O ring, but the O ring works on most handi rifles. I would read all the stickys and faqs. My handi will get some nice dime size groups if I do my part and range conditions are in my favor. Best of luck at the range.

HiVelocity; I use my bipod on the sling swivel mount, and its the only way mine will shoot. I've tried resting the gun everywhere, and it will not shoot less than 1" with out the bipod. I also find that looseing the forend mounting screw and sliding a bussines card between the barrel and the forend floates the barrel, and tighten her down with the card in place and see how it shoots. My best groups come with the moly coated 40 gr. Vmax's with 26.5 grs. of H 335. It takes about 15 or 20 rds. before the moly starts working.  Digger
