6.5x55 -or- .257 Roberts??
« on: August 30, 2005, 10:58:19 AM »
I am seriously considering purchasing a bull barrel from the factory and sending it to Wayne at Oregunsmithing for a custom caliber.  I shot my first whitetail with a .257 Roberts (Ruger) and have wanted one in a Handi ever since.  I've not shot a 6.5x55 but from all that I've read it seems to be a pretty darn good round.  The rifle will be used for whitetail, javelina, possible pronghorn and varmints around the lease.  So what would you choose?  And for those guys that have seen and shot some of Waynes' work- what do you think?

Not a dime's worth of difference. What one will do so will the other. Case capacity is so close to equal it's of no concern in the decision. You're talking bullets of .257" vs. .264" in diameter, a lousy .007" difference.

If you wanted or needed to use heavy bullets the 6.5 would shine as you can get and use bullets up to 160 grains where as no one I know of makes bullets heavier than 120 for the .257.  But for your stated uses the bullets available for the .257 are fine.

Just pick the one that most turns you on.

I would say go for the 6.5x55. But thats just out of personal preference. The quarter bore don't really do anything for me.

I can't say much for either caliber, but I can say Wayne does dang good work and I would recommend him to anyone!! I've had a .25-06 Ultra rebored to .338-06 and a .38-55 Target rechambered and rebored to .405 Winchester, they both shoot sub moa, can't ask for more than that, his work is exemplary. The only problem I see right now is Wayne is in the middle of moving to eastern Oregon and probably won't be getting any new work done soon...plus there's hunting season coming up and I know he's a hunter!!!

Tough choice for sure.

The old swede will shoot a nice variety of bullets, most with a good BC. 140 grainers alway gave impressive accuracy in my old Mauser. They had to be loaded down, so if the Handi likes a "less than full" load you would be sacrificing a bit of velocity.

I've always wanted a Bob though. The 120's should work great on eastern whitetails and the 60 grainers fly at 3400-3600fps. Pretty snappy for varmints and coyotes (or are they one and the same).

I envy your choice, either would serve you well.

This is a one sided discussion for me.  I have a 6.5x55 swedish mauser and it cloverleafs the 129gr at 100 yrds.  I have always wished that they would make a Handi barrel in 6.5.  Another thought is the Rem. 260.

I wouldn't spend the money. NEF offers both .25-06 and 7mm-08. Flip a coin, pick one, and save $300.

I've been thinkin the same thing as LeftoverDJ, but have been biting my tongue cuz it's always nice to have the caliber you really want instead of just what you can get....ala .338-06...405 Winchester or 45-120!!! :)

6.5 x 55mm swede - the most versatile round on the planet.  But either would work.  The 7-08 is closest, but I can see wanting one of those two.  The swede definitely would have cheaper plinking/practice ammo.  Or you can load it up quite a bit hotter than saami specs in modern guns like an NEF.  But like the man said, just whichever floats your boat.

Here's a thought...why not buy the 25-06 Barrel...shoot it for a little while...and when you get tierd of MOA groups with it...send it on out to Wayne and have a 270 Winchester made from it.....then...when you get tired of that one...have one of these built...

He does excellent work...and I highly recommend him ...
