Barrel contours...
« on: September 02, 2005, 09:10:11 PM »
Guys,

I have a few questions.

I am in the process of getting a 17HMR Sportster with the heavy barrel.

I hate "tupperware" stocks and the first thing I will be doing is replacing them.I have two questions for your H&R /NEF buffs here..

1) Will the buttstocks from any of the Topper style receivers interchange (Rimfre/centerfire.etc)??

2)On the forends ,how many barrel contours are there? From what I can tell there are only two (sporter and heavy barrel) ..Are those contours the same from centerfire to rimfire??

I ask the above, because I have a local 'smith who has a line on some good stocks but he does not know enough about the diff in the models to tell me if they will work on my 17HMR..

Your thoughts would be apreciated... :wink

I don't know about the topper stocks, but here are some semi-finished aftermarket stocks for the Handi.

As best as I can tell, all the buttstocks interchange.  Current buttstocks fit my older H&R 158 Topper.

There is also a Superlight barrel contour, so the barrel channel size in the forends will vary.  Not sure about shotgun forends.

My older 30-30 Topper barrel would be considered a Superlight contour while my SB2 30-30 is a 'heavy sporter' contour.

Thanks for the replies..

As to the barrel contours,I have found at least four Handi rifle barrel contours:

1) Superlite
2) Regular sporter
3) Bull(heavy)
4) Extra heavy-Buffalo classic.

As to the stocks,I was already aware of the Gunstocks, inc products.I find it interesting that in their listings for the NEF/H&R singleshot forearms they do not  even mention the barrel contours... :?

The stocks my gunsmith friend has a line on are from a new company making wood stocks.I think they make at least two different barrel inlets for the forearms, so I will go with the bull barrel model for my 17HMR..

The new stocks are very nice, they have a classic, slim shape and I think look better than any I have seen so far for the Handis..When I get a set fitted to my rifle,I will post some pics..

jim62,
all the nef stocks will work on your rimfire frame and barrel except the 20ga and 12ga ultraslug forarms and the 10ga forarm.you can take that plastic stock you have a sell it here or maybe trade it off for a pallet wood stock.lots of trading goes on here

are you the jim62 from the old Marlin talk rimfire forum?
