I'm looking real closly at the new vaqureo, also at a black powder frame Uberti, and the new Taurus Gaucho, all in 45 colt.

I realy like the authenticiy of the Uberti, and shoot mostly black powder loads, but I do a lot of shooting, not just the normal couple hundred rounds now and then. How does the Ruger handle black powder?

As any gun you shoot black powder cartridges, a good cleaning is needed. The Rugers will work just fine with the black powder cartriges.

I think that the Rugers are the best buy on the market today. I`ve taken several deer with my 3 screw SBH, but have played with several of the New Models also. While I prefer the old one , the new one aren`t that bad, and with alittle trigger work make and excellant gun for the range or the field.

I use an old style 44 mag Vaqueros for cowboy action, and I shoot nothing but Goex 3f. The Vaquero handles it very well. Another shooter in my club just got new style Vaqueros in .357, and he'll be using them with 777.

I used to have a pair of Ubertis in 45 Colt, and they were nice. A full charge of 35 to 37 grains of black powder under a 250 or 255 grain bullet is quite a handful, but the Ubertis handled it fine.

Well I went up to the local gunshop and looked at what they had. I was very temped by the 5 1/2" Vaquero, but just like my old modle cylinder bolt droped way to soon and left a nice drag mark around the cylinder and had a good bit of trigger creap. But man it felt good in the hand.

I wound up getting a pre-war smokless frame Uberti 4 3/4" 73' catleman pretty reasonable. Color case is pretty good, timing was dead on and I had no trouble hitting the 3" square steel targets at 20 yards. I'll print it on paper sometime tomorrow.

Full power black powder rounds are a handful for sure.

One question if anybody knows, the firing pin moves around in the hammer, like the pin is smaller than the hole in the hammer. It doesn't move in and out, only side to side. Do I have to worry about breaking the retaining pin and coming out or is it supposed to move a little?
