Rolling Block clearance questions
« on: September 02, 2005, 11:00:37 AM »
Hello gang,

Question for the day is, what should the clearance be between the side of the hammer and the frame wall and the same on the roller, I think mine is a little loose, but I can not find any specifications anywhere on what the clearance should be.

Thanks for any help or pointers to more info,

Greg

The looseness problem with rollingblocks is a pivot pin issue. The side clearances shouldn't matter all that much. They need to be tight enough that the action can function smoothly but without slop,,a few thousandths..?? In any case it's not super critical.. Block/hammer timing and ejector timing, plus if rebuilding, paralellism of the block ark and the pivot pin and the same with the hammer..  I've a modern repro in the shop for stockwork right now..

gunnut69,

Thanks, I have .019 clearance on the main block, and right at .017 on the hammer. The front pin is just a little loose, but run out is under .004 on the dial gauge I tried to measure it on. I have been reading one of Mr. de Haas' books, and I am thinking about having a new pin made for the front, then back pin doesn't move. I know I also need to make new capture pieces for the sides as the ones I have are beat up and not real nice looking nor do they cover the edge of the pins well.
Thanks for the info,

My son has a no#5 that is probably as loose as yours. I have one that probably has .010 side play, and a no#1 that has almost nothing. The ones I have measured differs in the mortise in the frame not the block and hammer. Some frames  are tight and some are loose. I don't pay it any mind, just load her up and shoot.
