KDF muzzle brake on a 338 Win. Mag.
« on: August 11, 2005, 11:32:49 AM »
I have a 338 Win. Mag. with a KDF muzzle brake on it.  My question will I be able to use this rifle if I hire a Guide or P.H..  I don't mind the muzzle blast, but I am behind the rifle.  Any suggestions?

I am interested in what JJ’s thoughts are on this issue of muzzle brakes.  A few of the PH’s I talked to want you to remove the brake if possible or use another rifle.  Lawdog

I'll tell you what I think. If you can't handle the recoil, you should get a heavier gun, or a lighter caliber.

This particular rifle came to me with it on it.  It has a Neidler style checkered steel but plate.  I think the person before be found it unpleasant to shoot.  It has a beautiful stump figured stock and I would hate to install a limb saver on it.  Maybe a mercury recoil suppressor?

I'm no fan of muzzle blast enhancers! However if you find a PH that will not take you then just let me set up the hunt for you and I will take you.  these annoying contraptions are not bad for a hunter who shoots it five or ten times on a hunt. However when you work as a PH and you have 6-10 clients in a row all shooting 5-10 animals your hearing will have permanent damage pretty darn quick. I just plug my ears and have to deal with it. I doubt that as many people that have these really need them but I have had some folks with Bursitis or joint problems and they cannot hunt(shoot) without them.

I think you should be able to unscrew this thing and put on a thread protector. That is what I would do and would really like if my hunters would do that too. Many just use them and life goes on. Annoying yes, needed ? who knows? Will I turn down a hunter with one, not a chance.

I agree, it might be hard to cut that stock. But I would cut that barrel just behind the muzzle brake, and have it recrowned. The steel butt plate might be replaced with a thin rubber one without altering the stock. And I here tell from a fella on this sight named Lawdog, that those suppressors do work. I know little about them, except that many trapshooters swear by them. I do know that any extra weight does reduce recoil.

Mercury recoil suppressor do indeed work, I have one on my 416 Rigby and what a difference it made.  :D

You might consider replacing the KDF brake with one of Jim Brockman´s B.E.S.T. Quick Change Muzzle Brake.  It's switchable.  Open to shoot from the bench, close when you are hunting.

Double D, that's an interesting photo on your link, but I sure don't see any muzzle brake. :)
