Magnum Research BFR 500 Mag
« on: September 14, 2005, 05:29:56 PM »
Anybody have any experience with the BFR.  They chamber the 500, and it's a bit cheaper than the S&W.   Anyone have any pros, cons?

I had one for about a year and sold it to my buddy. I have 2 S&W 500 still.
The BFR 500 Mag is a very well made gun in my opinion, I had well over 1000 rounds down the tube on the BFR. I sent it to Mag-na-port and had some custom work done to it. I found the gun very accurate and the recoil was very manageable even before I sent it to Mag-na-port. My buddy loves the BFR. For me I just like the S&W 500.  :D

Warranty Void

I read on the magnum research website that using re-loaded ammo in their guns voids the warranty.  Is this true of other gun manufacturers like ruger or S&W?

Here is there information on reloads. But how can they tell if it was a reload??? There is a one year warranty with the gun.

Can I shoot reloads in my BFR revolver?
I am sorry we do not offer any reloading information since we do not recommend reloading in any of our products. Any use of reloads (problems caused by them) null and void the warranty on any MRI product. However, if you are going to reload we suggest you strictly follow all safe reloading information in a good up to date reloading manual.

My experience with the BFR is very limited (one) but, based on what I've seen, I'd have to say that they are very similar in overall value to the Ruger Blackhawks. Yes, they are different, but I would say they are neither better nor worse overall. The extra expense they can get for their guns comes not from the quality they achieve so much as the novelty of what they produce. I believe that Ruger produces an aesthetically better quality product while the BFR may have better functional tolerances. My BFR is currently at the factory for warranty work and has been there for over a month. It had a QC issue related to the timing of the cylinder. I think they'd have to prove abuse from a handload to be able to use that as a defining warranty issue.
