Author Topic: Browning Pro-40 rattles ... is this normal? (Read 474 times)

I have a Browning Pro-9 and a Pro-40. With the exception of caliber, both guns are pretty much identical except the Pro-40 rattles when I chamber a round. If I eject the magazine, no matter how hard I shake the gun and the magazine, there is no rattle but when I insert the magazine back in, even a slight movement will cause a rattle noise to be heard.

This doesn't happen with my Pro-9. Is this normal for the Pro-40? Is there anything that can be done about it?

Sir Knight: it may just be the magazine that has a rattle in it. I have a couple of 1911 mags that do the same thing. If there is no malfunction involved then I would just pick up a couple of additional mags and see if that resolves the rattle. If the magazine does not rattle in the magazine well then the rattle is in the mag and the way the spring compresses under loaded rounds - one of the cartridges may hang up just a hair allowing the one beneath or above to 'rattle around' inside the mag. My Kel-Tec mags rattle like crazy, but have never had a malfunction of any kind. Seems to be just the way the rounds stack in the mag.

It isn't the magazine that rattles. If I take the magazine out of the gun, I can shake it as hard as I can and there is no rattle.

I only hear the rattle when I chamber a round AND insert the magazine. Magazine by itself doesn't rattle and the gun with a round in the chamber and NO magazine also doesn't rattle. Only when the magazine is inserted into the gun with a round in the chamber.

Reread Mikey's post. When a loaded mag is inserted in the pistol, the spring is compressed a little more that with the loaded rounds alone. The spring pressure is not even thruout the mag due to friction. That causes some of the rounds to be under pressure and some not. The loose round/rounds move around causing the rattle. Bet if you take one round out of the mag the rattle will go away.

Thank you. Now I understand. I actually had to remove three rounds in order to get the rattling to stop.
