Got my barrels in today, and got the 280 preped and got 30 rounds loaded with a mix of loads using 139gr and 162gr Hornady SST's.

Using IMR 4350 cause that is what I have for now, anyone else have some pet loads?

Heading to the range tomorrow AM, will post results.

Man I love getting a new barrel and fire those first shots through it.

This is not what anyone wants to hear, but I have done some serious soul searching.  I have, for many reasons, to simplify my rifle collection.

The Handi's will go! :cry:

I put 30 rounds through the 280, with nary a stuck case.  I worked about 45min on the barrel for prep and it paid off, but they have to go.

I'll be a two gun (bolts) hunter from now on.  I know this sounds really odd after just getting the 3 new barrels but I just hoped they (new barrels) would clear up this nagging feeling I've had for many months.

I'll list the package in the classifieds, as I'd prefer to sell it to one person.

You guys are a GREAT bunch of folks and have been the LARGEST reason I waited this long, I didn't want to leave this family of fellow shooters.  I realize that I do not have to leave, I won't, but it won't be the same.

Yea, I am.  This has been going through my head for a long time.  I've mentioned before I have a quirk about too many caliber too keep up on.  This latest purchase of barrels was a last hoora, but it didn't help.

I have to admit, partly cause my first love (of guns) is for bolt rifles and todays trip to the range re-affirmed it, so that is the way I have to go.

I still firmly believe in one shot one kill, but have always loved bolts.

By the way, the 280 recoil is a non issue.  Very nice!  Even at 3200+  Some of the loads approached 3300 with a 140gr bullet.  This will be a nice big game caliber.

Handi',

Let's continue the assumption that you are a Christian man, because I sense that it is true.    The real priorities are God, Family, Country (in time of war/catastrophe), and Job.   Guns are really just a tool to protect the above, and to provide some entertainment.

I'm not surprised to learn of your 're-alignment'.   I've gone through it myself, partly because of prayer!    It's actually a good feeling to cut back and know that you have what a man needs and can make due with it.   As long as you have all that you reasonably need in the firearms department it actually turns out that "less is more."

I hope you continue to enjoy the shooting/hunting sports, while drawing closer to all other things of higher priority.

Handi:

I thought the same thing many a-time...but ...I changed my mind and went the opposite route...I sold off the last of the bolt rifles which was my  270 Weatherby...it was scary...a small voice inside said I was making a mistake,and those fast follow up shots were still needed...even though I haven't needed to take one for such a-long time..funny...I was thinking that the other day when stringing my recurve....................

My advice Friend...is to remember..." Once a Handi-holic....Always a Handi-holic "... :) and even if you do sell them all off...you'll still be welcome here...cause we all know.... You'll Be Back :)  :-D  :)  :D

Thanks for the kind words and your assumption is true (although there are days one might wonder :( ) but yes I'll NEVER give up shooting and hunting.  They are a part of my life.  Just spending too much time tinkering and not enough hunting.

I have my LH Savage 30-06  and my 375 Win 94 Big Bore and I'll get a left hand bolt 223, Henry 22LR lever, oh yes, my 50 cal percusion ML.

That's more than enough for me.

Handi I just want you to know I think you are a fine man and hope someday you will reconsider. I get told sometimes (mostly friends of mine who don't enjoy the shooting sport as much as me) saying "gee how many do you need?"  I given this some hard thought myself over the years and even ask my wife to be  " am I out at the range to much? "
"Dose it bother you that I love what I do that is such an important part of my life?"

She smiles and says no John because your not in the bar and tells me I am good father and her,my boys and daughter now love this sport.
So many calibers to keep up with......... I understand that and respect it also. With 3 (and two on the way) people besides myself teaching safety, shooting, reloading for all there own new rifles put me in  some very trying days. May I also add some very fun rewarding days as well. Some things that helped my process was to reload different groups of 5 for the rifles and log the results in my log book  help me keep up with the  calibers.  I some how found time to shoot handi rifles that shot pretty good and the guys like your self here  helped me make them shoot better. Please don't mistake what I am telling you that I some how have it harder than others...just  sharing my experiences with you in plain truth. I am glad you will still enjoy the shooting sport and it is my hope you come back here often. Again I respect your decision.

Thanks and I am not giving up shooting or hunting at all, just giving my self more time to enjoy them.

I have and will continue to enjoys the folks on this forum.  I'll still be lurking and every once in a while giving my opinions :grin:  but I do feel I have enough guns, (blasphemy?).
I absolutely LOVE to shoot and hunt, I'm just not real good at hunting and like my wife always says, "I don't need any more challenges", and I have to agree.

Mostly I just want it simple.

Handi,

While that is kind of sacriligeous to tell everyone on here that you're getting rid of your handirifles, I can see where you're coming from.  I've wondered the same thing myself here lately(downsizing).  I guess that means you'll be using your muzzleloader when you come out to Ohio for deer hunting then?  On a lighter note, it's a good thing that you didn't get the ultra slug barrel instead of the tracker II barrel...saved 40 bucks or so.

:D Handi I understand the feeling about simplyfing your collection, heck I been contemplating the same thing. What do I need to hunt and how many. I'll stick with my rem. 7600 in 270,  Handi 25-06 and new toy I picked up to build a semi-custom 721 in 270, my Fluted and 223 and finally decided to purchase a mossy ATR 100 in 06 and maybe a henry 22. As you can tell my favorite cal. is 270win. I don't need anything else. It's funny at our age we change when we least expect it. I teach school and was thinking of finding another profession but, I went back this year and decided I'd miss my kids to much and frankly I love to teach History. The aftermath of Katrina and the suffering of our neighbors has certainly had me look inside on what is really important. I thank my savior that my family is safe and the aide is finally reaching the coast. You see I lived on the coast when I was in USAF and have friends in the area and have know idea how they are. I said that to say this. We need to do what our hearts guide us to do. You maybe back to using Handi rifles you may not, it the big picture it doesn't matter, the man behind the name hasn't changed just his outlook. Keep posting, you've been kind to me since i joined this forum. Enjoy your remaining firearms, may all your endeavors be successful and may our God Bless.   Jess :-)  :-D

Why would you want to lurk...you don't have to...just keep posting...as you can see...you very well liked here...and I wouldn't want to see you stop posting just because you have gotten rid of your Handi's...your input is still valued here...and I for one don't want to see you go :cry:

We all go thru different phases at one point in our lives...for one reason or another...wither it's monetary...or family problems...health reason...or simply wanting to change...it doesn't make us a different person...but...instead, we are just heading down a different path.Hopefully we'll meet up somewhere along the way...but if we don't that's ok too...cause we have had some good times while we were all together :agree:

You do what you have to do Bro...and come on back anytime you want...your always welcome here in my book :D
