Questions on my new Marlin
« on: October 01, 2005, 05:14:25 AM »
 Well I finally decided on which caliber to go with and just ordered a Marlin 1894C in 357/38 Spl. at an excellent price of $319 from my local sporting goods.  I plan on complementing it with a pair of EMF Hartford or Great Western II’s.

What I was looking for was recommendation on action work to help smooth out the Marlin.

Thanks, Tom

I was hoping someone else would jump in on this, because I don't quite remember the details, but a couple of years ago, one of the guys wrote about a slick  (and cheap) method.  Basically it was to disassemble the action into its major components (essentially a field-strip), glop up the bits & pieces with fine valve-grinding compound (it was suggested Flitz would probably work too), reassemble, and work the action about 500 times; then disassemble and clean thoroughly (to get the grit out) and lube as usual. Folks that tried it said it worked well.  Anyone else here have the details better?  Anyway, hope this helps.

That is "more or less" the method I use but with a little variation. While I have it stripped I use various hard Arkansas stones and crocus cloth to polish off any burrs on moving parts and their mating areas in the frame.

Having done all I can in that regard I then use JB Bore Paste to gob it on all over the moving parts and work the action a bunch of times. Then clean it all out, lube it up and check the results.
