44 Special loads for Model 624 Smith
« on: March 01, 2003, 03:25:04 PM »
I just traded off a Ruger Redhawk in 44 Mag for a Smith & Wesson N frame Model 624 with a 6 1/2" bbl.
If I wanted magnum loads I would have kept the Redhawk, but all the loading data for the 44 Special seems to be for light framed guns and on the very low side.
I want to load a Lyman 250 cast bullet to about 1000 fps and a 200 gr JHP to around 1100-1200 fps.
I think these MV should be attainable.  Anyone have any loads to share?

Thanks Steve,
been to your pages and the loads appear on the light side.  Looking for something more.

Well, the .44 Special is the .44 Special, not the .44 Magnum.  And I can assure you that there is nothing "light" about a 180 grain JHC bullet sitting on top of 15.5 grains of 2400 and a CCI-350 primer...at least not in my Bulldog...

I agree that in a lighweight gun like your Bulldog that is a handful.  I'm loading for an N frame Smith, and don't want a magnum, but something like what CNC is loading:
180 gr. XTP @ 1250 fps and 623 ft lb.  That makes it legal for deer here in Illinois (500 ft lb min.)

I plan to load a Nosler 200 gr JHP.  Looks like 2400 would be my best powder choice with what I have in stock.
