Does weeds turn you away??
« on: February 24, 2003, 12:17:55 PM »
After spring is over do weeds keep you away??? do you stay home?? This is the time to kick in with that weedless topwater stuff for sure. Lets get into this awesome topwater action that some are missing out on. There are some great weedless topwater baits out there: Mr Twister Tri Alive Top Prop in fire perch, weedless plastic mouse in gray or white, and Mepps Timber doodle silver/white trailer. There is so much more out there yet to try if your fishing from shore don't let weeds turn you away its the best action weeds 'n' topwater the only thing you have to be quick in setting the hook and keeping the rod tip up so the fish can't bury itself down in the weeds once hooked is the only really down fall that can happen. And the really big fish hide in the weeds/cover too so if your looking for that one big hog he is in there for sure. I have to add the mepps timber doodle is a different lure you use it by letting it fall into the open pockets and bring it up and then into the next pocket besides working the top at the same time this is an awesome bait too you will be impressed with it I was and still am. In my second year of fishing  the weeds became really heavy I still fished and didn't give up and i started looking for more weedless stuff the fish are there we just have to readjust to catch them.  Just another pattern & presentation to add to your arsenal.

Please feel free to add your favorite weedless topwater bait or presentation too!!!!!! join in!!!!!

Fishing from shore isn't different you just have to adapt to it I like it!!!

Here's a tip for you.  I could never find just the right size/ weight spoon for fishing the coontail moss and duck weed I find in a lot of lakes around.  I stole a iced tea spoon, a table spoon and a regular teaspoon from my wife's kitchen and cut their handles off.  I used a small drill and a small metal screw to attach a hook to the handle end along wiyh a spinnerbait skirt.  I used a larger bit and put a split ring on the opposite end.  I used a 4/0 hook on the table spoon and smaller on the others.  It is amazing how well this works.

Funny this bait you talk about I just bought at Kittery Trading Post in Kittery, Maine its called "Buzz'n Rex" The orginal rex spoon made by Weezel Bait Company. It has a buzzbait blade infront of a spoon with a skirt and it looks very much like the bait you talked about. I haven't used it much yet but I will test it this spring.                  BigBill

When the weeds get thick around here I switch to a Strike King Poppen Frog or a Moss Boss frog.  Over in the valley in the river a Mann's Mouse in white works great, just remember to add some noise by adding a few plastic beads to the inside.  If it gets too thick for them then it's go to time.  I haul out the 4 1/2" tube baits and start pitching them into little holes but remember to use stout equipment because you never know how much vegetation you're going to have along with your bass.  Lawdog

I to agree the white mouse early in the "AM" like 5:30 in low light in the lilly pads fished "slow" have had some awesome results. The big bass feed in the shallows in low light conditions thats cloudy, evenings and early mornings and don't leave out night fishing too. But the weedless white mouse topwater in low light for sure!!           BigBill

Just pause over the open spots and hang on I have seen rods break with bigger fish trying to get them up out of the weeds after they strike and go down. The really big bass do hide in the weeds.

Grass has always interested me.  I will admit, being a highland reservoir fisherman, I don't have a lot of experience in it, but it is an interesting topic.  We just don't have grass up here for the most part.  You can find some hydrilla here and there in places you wouldn't think of like on Dale Hollow, but still for the most part, we fish rocks and pebbles and mud here.

Weeds aren't hard to master with all the weedless baits that are available now I'm sure you guys get the bassproshops or cabelas catalog and for the ones who don't get it order one. The first time I seen these catalogs  I thought I was in heaven with all the different baits. Good fishing stores  here are not to be found the only one thats is close to a bassproshops here is Dicks Sporting Goods has the most but not all like the mail order shops have. To get a large assortment of bait sizes and colors you have to mailorder. Just to give someone out there a tip on how to shop and find different stuff.                                        BigBill

Maybe I'm lucky not to have a bassproshops or cabelas nearby I'd be broke for sure. I seen a show about the history of fishing on the history channel and the owner of bassproshops came on and said you can never have enough tackle its my exact words to the misses, and she saw the show too and i did get the strangest look from her when he said it.

 Mann's Shadow is great in the weeds, pads, or just about anywhere you have the nerve to throw it.Slide it across the tops, and let it fall slowly through the holes. It's best to use Spider Wire,so you can bring in the pads of needed.

Thank's for the tip sounds like another great weedless bait I'll check it out.  It sounds very close to how I use the Mepps Timber Doodle too bringing it across the top of the weeds letting it fall down in the open deep pockets too.  My point is weeds can be conquered with ease and with the correct bait too. I wish we had some more posts here and others would get involved too and not just read come on guys/gals join in we all can learn from each other too it is a two way street here?? Have a hot bait or a presentation you want to talk or brag about? Maybe you older bass guys have a secret for catching fish or finding bass?? "US" people joining in is what makes a forum work come on we will keep the tricks between all of us too and won't tell anyone else(just kidding) I like to see other catch fish too because I was one of those guys who didn't catch anything until I started getting more serious about it and paying attention and focusing on what I was doing all this stuff does work!!!!        BigBill

Titelines & BigBass a new state record or world record could be within your grasp think about it a new world record fish could mean "one million dollars" so think about it the next time you cast out your line this next fish could be the one??? Just make sure you have good line on your reel!!!! Don't set that hook too quickly give him time to take it then bang set that hook like you never did before you just never know?? I have a dream, a goal and you could too this fish can be anywhere some little healthy pond that is spring feed you just never know. No I'm not fooling around?? There is a lot of fisherman across the country in the hunt for this fish right now take a look at "trophybassonly.com" Fish Chris is one of them take alook at his buddies pictures some pretty big hogs are being caught already.  This is just like hitting the lotto if you don't play you can't win, so if you don't try you can't catch this big fish give it a shot try at dawn in the shallows(low light), midday and early evenings(low light again) Big Bass feed in the shallows in low light conditions when its bright out their hiding in the weeds or around structure and if your catching smaller bass fish deeper the bigger fish are underneath the smaller fish yes they are still hiding so trust me I will put you on the fish look for points and rocky dropp offs this is an awesome sport don't let the chance and catch of a lifetime pass you by!!!!!!  "One Million Dollars" and if you win you owe me........ a cup of coffee and a fishing trip on your new boat for sure!!!
