First long-range cloverleaf
« on: September 19, 2005, 07:28:03 AM »
I've had a couple of these at 25 yards, but never at 100!, and with one of my new open-sighted flintlocks no less!

Great Plains Rifle, .495 Hornady ball, .018" oiled patch from Track of the Wolf, 80grs. Goex FFg & Goex FFFFg to prime.

Oh yeah, and some luck.

It seems like 4" groups are more the norm, but I'll take it.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.........................

Way to go R.R.  Still waitin'for my first at that distance.  By the way I been to your beautiful river when we lived in Owatonna.  Great people up there and have friends there still.  They send my wife chocolates from Costas' every once in a while. Wow they are soooo good.  Good luck with your fall shootin'/huntin.

I can get them at 50yds, but have not moved out to 100 yet. Still trying to find the right patch and ball combination!

Rum River, good shooting! Ive had one, last month. Since it was the second time I'd shot the rifle I'll say it was a combination of luck , conditions and me doing everything right, for once. Rifle was a Pedersoli Pennsylvania flint, .45 cal. 50grs. Swiss 3f and a .15 patch.
Good luck with your next clover leaf. D.E.C

Rum River, I moved out to 100 today, tried different powder and soft and hard balls out of my new .73 cal.........up till today, fifty has been my farthest shot.

My first group was 3 1/2" using a hard .715 ball and 100 FFF, 1200fps.

Then I tried several other combinatios 100 and 150FF and 125FFF......BIGGER groups!

Then I got out the soft lead, 150FF, 7" string, then back to 100FFF and I shot a 1 5/16" group. With the .720 diameter balls, it was almost a cloverleaf! I used a wad under the same load and it was 2"s high.

Most of the time this gun has shot better with a card wad under the ball, but not so today!

That has to be a tight fitting ball, but that might have something to do with your accuracy. That is like a Target loading, nice and tight. For example, I use .490 balls with .15 patches. Tight, but pretty easy to load. I am going to try .495 balls with .10 patches next. Great shooting-Jack.

Nice shooting.
What is the sense in preserving collectible items just so they can be auctioned off by uncaring heirs for their pecuniary value ? I am inclined to believe that vintage cars are to be driven, old wine is to be drank, and fine guns are to be shot.
