What is more important to you - Long Eye Relief or Wide Field of View?

For me, it's a Long Eye Relief!

Good question. I like both so I'll compromise a little on both.I don't like less than 3.5" of eye relief. That said I'll go for the most field of view in a scope with 3.5" of eye relief or greater.  :?

yea, I know what you mean...it's somewhat of a compromise.  But, like you, I would never compromise anything less than 3.5" on standard rifles, and I prefer much more - 4" or more, on magnum rifles.

I would rather have the eye relief alot of the field of view is controlled by the how much power of the scope you are using is, too many hunters forget that a scope is a SIGHT its not really a pair of binoc. or anything else its mearly a sight and you still have to do your part b-4 the sight on the rifle is called into play. :D   JIM

Well, so far is looks like long eye relief is the clear leader.

I really like (love) the Bushnell Elite 4200s.  My only real complaint is that they have unusually SHORT eye relief.  I really wish it was much longer.

Are you reading this Bushnell? :D

Eye relief If you are going to shoot heavy magnums or want more "sayso" in the balance of scope and rifle.   Sometimes just an inch in scope position can mean comfort or labor when holding to make a shot,  especially with a front heavy rifle.

I believe normally the eye relief is measured from the ocular (rear) lens and not the very end of the scope. I just got my Pentax mounted and the eye relief is 3.5-4". With Butler Creek lens covers on it the eye relief to the end of the scope is about 3". I mention this since it's something to consider if you're going to use lens covers. The Rem 760 I used to own had a scope with a 3.25" eye relief. I installed lens covers and never had a problem with it. My son used it and when shooting a deer that was uphill from him got his nosed bloodied from being struck by the scope.  :eek:     He has the rifle now and installed a Leupold 2x8 with a LONG eye relief.
