Where do you guys like to hit a whitetail on front quartering shots?  What's the best spot to aim for in this condition?  Any success/failure stories?

Rat smack on the point of the shoulder. I won't be out with anything that can't get the job done with that shot.

This is my absolute favorite place to shoot a whitetail.  If you hit him right where GB said, his neck will snap back and the chin will hit the ground.

This is NOT the job for a ballistic tip bullet.  I prefer bonded bullets as they will hold together through the bone.

Also, the front point of the shoulder gives you a very positive aiming point, much like aiming at a bullseye.

BTW, on a pure broad side shot, if you shoot em straight up the leg, slightly above centerline of the body, you will get that same instantaneous kill.  I feel as though I am a decent tracker, but it sure is nice when you don't have to.

No matter what the angle I always aim for the heart/lung area.  A bullet there and the freezer gets full.  Lawdog

Like Graybeard said, right on the point of the shoulder.  :D

The site iiibbb posted looks good. Study the pictures and aim for the exit spot (where you want the bullet to exit) like a bow hunter.

As an old bowhunter, I still prefer the broadside.    Hopefully, the deer will turn before he gets out of sight.    But if he is alerted and going to bolt, sometimes you gotta take what you got.
But like Lawdog said, know where the heart/lungs are and use enough bullet to get there.

I like the quartering shot as well.. If possible, I like to get the deer quartering to me, then place the shot @ the base of the neck.. It will usually pass in front of the leading shoulder and exit just behind the opposing shoulder.  Usually snaps the neck and mangles the cardiovascular system in that area...  I especially like that shot in my 22-250.

I try to avoid the double shoulder shot w/ any caliber for me.. might as well cut the deer off behind the shoulders and throw the front end away w/ that shot.. I'll just drop back and shoot through the lungs..

My preference is a quartering away shot...this allows me to take out the heart/lungs from the near side and go for the off shoulder..bullets can do some strange things every now and then..and can sometimes turn without going through the bulk of vitals.

Are these diagrams accurate?

I thought so. In fact i sent the link to my grand-son.  He needs all the help he can get as this will be his first deer hunt.
