Hi:

What is "Bore Sighting"? Does it set up a rifle with a scope so that it is ready to use?

When you mount a scope on a rifle,there is at first no telling where it would hit if you shot it.There is a tool called a boresighter that goes in the end of your rifle barrel,it has a grid like a target on it,you line up the cross hairs of your scope on the cross hair on the grid.What this does is it is supposed to get your shot on the target,you will still have to adjust it to where you want the bullet to hit.It is used to just get that first shot on the target somewhere close to the bullseye.,then you adjust it by shooting and adjusting.hope this helps some.sj

Once it's bore-sighted, I would test fire at 25yds first, then 50yds.....see what adjustments you need to make, THEN go to 100yds, or where you want the gun to hit point of aim, & make the final adjustments. Just my 2 cents, JD45

I did that the first time I used my Leupold boresighter. Now that I have confidence in the tool I go right to 100 yards. The furthest off it has been is about 6 inches at 100 yards. It is a magnetic tool, and needs to be carefully placed on the muzzle to make sure it is flat. It has paid for its self already in not having to shoot much to get on target.

You actually don't need any tools to bore sight. At the bench just center the target looking through the bore with the bolt removed and then line up the sights to center on the target. When both are centered on the target at the same time, the rifle will be bore sighted.

EsoxLucius, not all lever action rifles will enable you to remove the bolt, as the Marlin will, to look thru the barrel to line up the bull on the target, as you mentioned. My 1892's or my 1873's won't. JD45

jd45, you are correct, I should have specified no tools are necessary if one can remove the bolt and look through the bore. Thanks. I'm in Eau Claire.

Been thru Eau Claire many times. My brother & sister-in-law have a cabin on Sand Lake, about 40 miles north. Her grandparents owned the resort many years ago & she bought one of the cabins as a place to go for the summer, JD45.

You can buy a very nice lighted(laser) bore sight for around 40 bucks that will cover several calibers.It will get you on-paper very nicely,then go to the range and fine-tune.Some bore sights as someone else has mentioned just fit in end of barrel and you line from there.Like looking thru scope into a scope,so to speak.Most,if not all gun shops have some type.Just take gun to them and they line it up for a couple of bucks or so.If you don't want to buy one.Also,surely,you have a hunting buddy that has one.......Rick
