I 've been getting bit by my Nikon Pro-staff 3-9x40 more than usual. I don't understand i mean i hold the same way but many times in a row ouch! im just barely getting hit but i am. Its a .308 Ultra, kinda hard to shoot someting that fights back. do i perhaps need a new scope? it also fogged on me in the rain.

Losen the rings, slide scope forward all the way, then adjust eye relief for proper focus.  lol

Yep...time for a different scope...if it fogged it failed and it isn't worth anything to you..Send it in for a warranty repair if you were happy with it before it fogged...as far as smacking you when you shoot it..could be your crawling the stock to see thru a scope that's going bad...Nikons don't have the greatest amount of eye relief to start with...and there are several brands that are just as bright and clear that have better eye relief if you decide to go with another.

If you have the scope mounted too close to your eye, loosen the ring caps and slide it forward enough to have a full field of view when your head/face is in your normal shooting position. There should be approx 3½" from your eye to the ocular lense of the scope since the Prostaff has 3.6" of eye relief on any power setting, which is plenty for the .308 Win, it doesn't have enough recoil to cause the scope to hit you if you have it properly mounted and you are using proper shooting form. You may have to change the position of a ring on the rail to get it adjusted just right.

If it's fogging on the outside of the lense, it's evident that you are too close to it, also, and doesn't mean the scope is defective. If the fogging is on the inside of the lense, it needs to go back to Nikon for replacement/repair.

im pretty sure it fogged inside. I was at the range with a light misty rain and wiped off the lenses and it was still foggy. I can't slide the scope any real farther without the hammer in the way(which is right under the scope's focus lock ring).

next range trip i'll buy some .308 150gr Fusion to see what happens, i have been using 165gr bullets in my rifle so maybe i'll get better results in terms of eye to scope contact and accuracy.

All good advice.  Just a thought, if you can`t get any more "eye-relief" from your set up and don`t want to buy different rings/base, how about
adding a re-coil pad? Thin, thick, what ever.

Well, the reason why most folks use higher rings is exactly the problem you're describing, to have the scope mounted properly, either the power ring or the ocular bell will interfere with the hammer, so the scope needs to be a little higher and farther forward for proper eye relief.

Put a 1/2" thicker recoil pad on it.

You won't find a prefit recoil pad for it, the pad that comes on the rifle is just a little less than 1" thick. The Limbsaver is a great pad, but is only about an 1/8" thicker and requires fitting. Perhaps someone can recommend a pad that is more than about 1½" thick that could be fitted?? Sounds like new pad or new rings is the answer........ along with a new scope!!

if its still functioning i solved a few probs and saved $$. I put a Texas made steel tubed Weaver 2.5-7x32, locked at 4x, this is smaller so i got a generous amount of hammer clearance and at least .5-.75" more eye relief. I'm still sending the Nikon in soon which i can put on perhaps a .223 barrel or similar should i get one. the eye relief is comforting, in it current spot i can barely bring my eye to the scope so no more scope payback.

Dont feel bad about the scope bite.   I purchased a Ruger Featherweight 270 years ago with a large varmint scope.   ...then proceeded to load up some rather hot and nasty 100gr woodchuck rounds.   I gave my self a really bad case of scope eye which looked like I picked a fight with George Foreman.

...I'll never, ever do that again.

what kind of scope was it? loads that generated too much energy for eye relief to counter? you battling varmints or what for hot loads

speaking of varmint scopes i was at a gunshow today and saw a Weaver K10x 32mm it seemed, EL Paso but is was just odd with such a small AO obj bell.

I really cant remember the make or model(11-13 years ago, owned it for 3 weeks).  I do remember it was a 6-24x56mm scope though..  And I did slide it forward as much as I could then adjusted eye relief to compensate.

I ended up selling it due to it's extremely light weight causings some really bad recoil on my bony shoulders.  Went and purchased a heavier Remington(that got sold to, bolt action isn't for me).

And yes, I have a ongoing war with whistlepigs at 4 of our family farms.  No shot is too close, no shot is too far..  point blank-1000yard I'll shot at'm.  ...or even farther if I see them.
