7.62x39 shootin report
« on: September 06, 2005, 10:20:50 AM »
I just recieved my barrel from NEF and I am pretty happy with it.   First off they sent a new fore arm with it and the old one, I don't know why but I'm not complaining.  So I put a Simmons ATEC scope on it, bore sighted by looking down they barrell. First 5 shots where on the paper 6th and 7th where in the bull, This is at 60yards or so. Shot several more groups and all hovered around 1 inch. I was using winchester white box because it was cheap. I then tried shooting 10 rounds fast, I ended up with a 2.125 high by 1.125 wide group most of them touching.  I didn't clean this barrel just mounted it and put 40 rounds thru it, I believe this is easy a sub MOA rifle and very pleasent to shoot.

A good cleaning and some handloads are next. BTW it won't even fire the wolf stuff, I just had to try. 8)

Sounds like the gun has some good promise   Yeah I would never use wolf ammo. One may as well through rocks instead ...more accurate and you save money to  :? . Thanks for the report

I shot a few from it and I could tell that they wanted to stick, there was a hesitation on opening as the extractor shoved the brass out.  Shot well tho.

The hard recessed primers on the Wolf 7.62x39 are the problem.  Wouldn't go off due to light primer strikes.

Surplus and most commercial 7.62 is produced for the AK's and SKS's.  They are notorious for slam-fires due to protruding firing pins.  The ammo manufacturers make the primers harder and recessed to prevent that from happening.  They also use steel cases ... all the above make it a poor choice for the Handi Rifle.

I didn't buyit to shoot surplus thou I have two SKSs for that, I wanted to play with this round in a handie to see what kind of groups it'll make and to see if I can get it shooting cast bullets, The first shots are very incourageing good enuff that I'll not hesitate to take it deer hunting this fall. 8)

That's a little harsh.  I have two SKSs and my friends have some too.  We've fired many thousands of rounds thru our rifles without a single problem.  I've never personally heard of anybody having a slamfire in their SKS.

I have heard ONE internet story about a guy who's buddy had a slamfire, lost control of the rifle, which bounced around while firing full auto and ended up shooting the guy in the head.  I don't know if that story is true or not.  I'd bet real money that the guy failed to properly clean the old crusty gunk out of the surplus rifle before he fired it.  There are several versions of this same story floating around, however I find it very hard to believe that multiple people have lost control of their rifles and gotten shot in the head like that.  I call BS.  It's propaganda from commie SKS haters who can't stand the fact that SKS are so darn reliable AND inexpensive, plus rangemasters can't reload the surplus ammo casings.

IF such accidents happen, they're likely the gun owner's fault for not cleaning it properly.  Especially an old rifle.  One local range prohibits loading more than 2 rounds in SKS rifles at one time.  Silly!

When I shoot handloads in my SKS with standard primers It amazes me that I don't get a slamfire enerytime I drop the bolt. If you chamber a round and then eject it without firing you WILL see a very well defined firing strike even on military ammo. This is not an SKS only problem This is something that must be taken into consideration with ALL military semiauto rifles.
So take a chill pill man I bet that a large majority of posters here own SKS'es :D

I had to disassemble my SKS for the very reason of slamfires. I have thoroughly cleaned every piece and oiled the neccasary parts. After putting it back together, I can't even cycle my safety on and off 10 times without it discharging-unloaded of course  the safety
So I put it out of business until I can get new or "good condition" trigger assembly.
Being raised up with safety as the #1 rule when even handling a firearm, it is a scary thing to fire off a round with out pulling the trigger.
