2nd range visit with .204 Handi...fun gets better
« on: September 02, 2005, 01:54:34 PM »
Found a great way to shrink groups...wind the scope power back.

My previous visit, the first with the rifle and scope, I kept it on 20x and was rewarded with 5 shot groups ~.6" to 1". All shot at 50m.

This time I thought I'd try some different settings and what do you know...

Following this logic I should fit a red dot and get 5 shots in .1.  :-D

Those are nice 50m groups...how does it do at farther ranges...say 100m?

It's a bit hard for me to get to the 100m range. However, I am hoping to go today...but the weather has other ideas.  :(

Rain, rain, rain...first in ages. Oh well, can't complain as we are in a drought. In fact...bring it on!!!!!  :rain:  :agree:

Might be a parallax problem at 50m. Next time you're there, crank it up to 20x, sandbag the rifle, and move your eye around while looking through the scope. If the crosshairs move on the target when the gun isn't moving, the target and the reticle aren't focusing on the same plane. Focus your scope until the movement stops, and then see if you can shoot a good group at 20x. Setting the scope at the 50m mark might not put your AO in focus at 50m, sometimes those numbers are off.

It could be, Mitch. I'll try adjusting the AO a bit and see if it makes a difference. The targets look clear as crystal, so it's in focus as such. Worth a try.

Thanks all.  :D

Fred M, I understand it's not a linear progression when you double the range. But opening up to 1.2" to 2" from a .39" group?????

As you know, it may well do that or it may well only open up by 50%.

I'll report back when I have time to make it to the 100 and 200m range.

My 204 fluted  Varmit does less than an inch at 100, along with my 223 and 22-250. And  my 45-70 isn't too far behind. Now that I can shoot it with acceptable recoil, I can probably do better. (Love those Choate`stocks!)

Bang off.

Did not see anything about a .39" group.

A group will at times settle down after about 200 yrds, it is called a bullet is gone to sleep. For instance a group will be 1MOA at a 100 but will have settled down at 400 to a 1/2 MOA and carry on with that to 1000 yrds if the wind is not a factor. This falling asleep is mostly with long VLD bullets and fast twist caused by gyroscopic yaw. Handi's are not in that category.

From 50 to a hundred yrds it usually a straight progression. It was not meant as a degrading remark just a matter of what usually happens.
