Lighter bullets in M1 Garand?
« on: October 11, 2005, 11:20:56 AM »
Has anyone loaded 110 or 125 gr bullets in a M1 Garand?  All the M1 specific data I've seen is for bullets from 150 gr, to 180 or 190 gr.

I know that in a Garand, you have to pay attention to gas port pressure, in addition to chamber pressure.  Can I just start with my 150 gr data, and substitute the lighter bullet, and work up from there?

I mostly use Accurate Arms' 2520 powder.

Lighter bullets in M1 Garand?

I have read where guys shooting cast bullets, light bullets and heavy as well in the Garand.  I don't and my question is always the same, Why do it?  The M1 was designed around a specific round.  It is a system in the true sense of the word.  I only shoot pulled 165gr. surplus bullets and use 4895 powder and load to millspec pressure in my M1 and I use millsurp brass which is harder to boot.  It works great.  Sure you can stuff anyting through it but it will have an effect in operation of the system, sometimes it could be harmful.  I save all my plinker loads, hot rod loads, cast loads  and such for my bolt guns.  It just makes sense.  IMHO  JB

PS:  If you want to talke to the guys who eat sleep and breath the M1 visit www.jouster.com  great site and great group of shooters/loaders - Hoorah!
