Old shakey diagnoses his accuracy problem
« on: September 13, 2005, 03:28:30 PM »
Things have NOT been going well at the range the past couple of sessions. I shoot bullseye pistol and was really amazed at the rotten slump I was in. I was calling my shots good and found the bullets hitting in unexpected places.  This drove me nuts because I thought I had developed a fault.

It turns out to have been a sheared screw that holds my sight. This allowed my sight to move slightly with each shot.

Well at least you know it wasn't you.  Now you can get the sight fixed and get back on track.

Don't you love that! There you are trying your best and you just can't seem to get it. You know you shoot better than this, you know your ammo is loaded right, is it a bad day? Did you change your grip? What the heck is it?! Then you finally get to use the excuse (for real) that so many bad shooters try to use everyday. These darn sights! :)

Not too long ago I was helping a guy out and watching over his shoulder trying to get his groups to tighten up. He was learning well, slowly getting his groups to shrink and I was happy. Then all of a sudden he was all over the paper, I thinking "okay, that probably enough for today. He's getting tired" He finished his magazine, lays the pistol down on the bench and its then I notice......

The Damn rear sight is not even there! Talk about concentrating on grip and trigger finger :-D

It kinda worked like that for me. The sight wasn't really loose so I didn't notice at first. Then I noticed that was slightly canted and a loose if I jiggled it a certain way. Oh well, that's shooting. Sometimes it really is the equipment.

I just had a similar occurance.

trying to set the 250yd zero for my long range set-up to confirm my drops at different distances.  Set up at 250yds and shoot a 1.5" group....okay for this gun but not great.  Well the group was .25MOA low, so I make the adjustment and squeeze one off.  Impact was in the other group.  Tossed it up to a bad squeeze.  Shot another and it stayed in the group again.  Another adjustment...same result.

So in a fit, i dial up 5MOA.....12.5 inches at 250yds.  Squeeze and the shot lands 6" high.....I cool down and let the barrel cool.....squeeze another....10"high....just 4" above the last shot.  So now i am pissed at myself for having a bad day.

Decide to go to 100yds and shoot for a small group reset the turrets to 100yd zero.  Well this gun shoot in  the .3's or better consistantly.  My first 5 shot group was 1" but low by 2 inches.

Next group was 1.5"....so more frustration.

Quit for the day and rethink everything.  Started thinking it was the scope but I thought for SURE it was the IDIOT behind the trigger.  Decided to send the scope in for a check-up.

The day the company got it....Nightforce Scope.....they called and said there were 2 issues and the turrets were completely replaced and the glass was reset and all returned to FACTORY NEW STATUS.  They said my scope will be back in 2 days.

USUALLY it is the IODIOT behind the trigger but every once in a while equipment does fail.

Later,
Kyle

Makes you feel a littel better when it's the equipment.

It's worse than that, it's sheared, and my top end is out of commission.
