:D I have made the decision to give up o the Handi rifle. They arevery nice guns but, the stocks don't fit me worth a hoot. The lack of a second shot in most of this country in problematic. most of the country I hunt has bears and big cats and a single shot doesn't make a bunch of sense. Last year Elk hunting i ran accross a blackie that was 300# plus, no problem but you never know. I saw plenty of lion tracks in the aera as well. Didn't feel undergunned with my Win. 70 -in 30-06. Just a little more security if you know what I mean. I guess i could change stocks but another $100.00 for a stock kills the attraction to these rifles. Guys thanks for your conversations on this forum. I'll stick around for other topics and see ya later.

I don't blame you a bit, when I'm hunting a certain very large boar here I always have the BAR 7 mag or the 444 lever gun in my hands. There's probably a certain problem that my Handi will not eject when I need it most, although its very rare it could happen when you need it the most. Digger

I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. i'll keep my 223 Fluted for now anyway. I'll probably keep my 25-06 just not carry them in the field much.Neither one an Bull Elk rifle anyway.'ll send them if you send cash!!! Really my biggest problem my Ultras stock beats the snot out of me. I guess the varmint stock is an option, it does fit me very well. I guess I could buy a rem 710? Whada think? Really picked up my custom Mauser 6.5 Swede today with Vari X II 3-9. This little number is my go to non-recoiling rifle. No your not a Poser?????????? :D

No No! not the 710!!! the Stevens 200 should be the econo bolt gun of choise. A while back I sold a handi for a stevens 200 in 270win PD shooting and vacation had sucked up the fun money, so it still has not got glass on it but that will change soon. But the reports are they are good shooters, solid bang for buck just like a handi.

:) Just kidding! I like wood not plastic. I normally look for solid Mauser actions. My 6.5 Swede is based on a 98 action! Friends don't let friends fire cheap 710's.             Jess :D

jmckinley, For what it's worth, two years ago as I was walking a woods edge, a spike buck cam over a rise and was walking straight at me. At about 30 yards I fired. He began to walk a tad faster, but not run, and I chambered another and fired again. That shot struck him dead on fore leg, just below the shoulder, shattered two incehs of leg, drove bone shard into the chest cavity, tore a 1.5" hole in the heart, exited breaking two ribs. On butchering him I found the first shot had entered him just in front of the ham and exited his anus, breaking the hip on the way. This was with my 357 Maximum Handi. The time lapse could not have been more than 5 seconds. Some time practicing reloading your handi will make it far faster than you may think possible. Old timers hunting with single shots would carry spare cartridges between the fingers of their off hand, ready to reload at a moments notice. You'll be surprised how fast a cartride in a left front shirt/jacket pocket can be retrieved and loaded up.

Most of the "follow up shot" crap is just that, crap. With two exceptions, every animal I ever shot moved away so quickly, that even a follow up shot with an autoloader would have been impossible.

While I don't live in bear country, I do think the "dangerous bear encounter" is far, far outblown to the reality. How many people venture into bear country and of those how many have deadly encounters????? It is a rare event to be sure.  Besides, If you can't kill a bear in a deadly encounter with a Handi, a bolt rifle sure ain't gonna make the difference bewtween walking out and not..... not sure that an autoloader would for that matter. It's easy to miss fast. In such an encounter, winning means having a very cool head, enough so that you can plant your feet, take proper aim and put the shot where it will really do some good.

But to each their own.

:D  First and foremost I agree with you! After pondering the posts I'll just keep my 25-06 and put the varmint stock by choate on the blasted thing. I have a need for a 6.5 Swede and I found it today. It cost me $375.00 with a Vari X II on top. I just couldn't pass it up. My Handi Fluted was sticking round regardless. I can put 5 rounds into 3/4" all afternoon and thats with a Weaver 2.5-7 steel scope. I agree, but the Bears in this country have killed an old women in the past year or so. I guess a 2nd shot is some security. A big bruin can move much faster than we could hope to. The odds are slim, but I never thought I'd nearly die in a car wreck 18 years ago either. I hope you see my logic. I'll use my Handi where the 25-06 is capable and carry my Super blackhawk!!!

A friend has been in Alaska over 40 years, has several Browns and Grizzlys to his score, has no use for a rifle for bear protection, says it is too easy to set one down and move away from it, the only protection is a gun you have all the time, including at the "rest stop" behind the bushes.

not a 710! i know the one i tried had a mushy bolt... :?

with the Stevens 200 (preAccutrigger savage) only 20 bucks more than an Ultra at the local Wallyworld..i'm really debating between the two.

I'll probably get the Survivor which is a 60 buck difference...but not a 710

I'm gonna order my first NEF this week...so I wonder how my conversion will go. Need to offload that 2506 just let me know

I am glad to see you hang in there jmckinley ...I love my handi rifles and I love my magnum in big bear country ...chances are an attack is rare and  may never happen, but they do happen and nothing wrong with being prepared.

Norse I really like my Ultra Fluted 223 it flat shoots lights out. But I really need the Ultra 25-06 to grow on me or it will be looking for a new home. The stock doesn't fit me very well and knocks me pretty good from the bench. I have been contemplating the Varmint stock on the 25. I know it can be adjusted and my Fluted is a joy to shoot. Have youtriedthat stock on any of your rifles? I agree that odds of arguing with a bear is slim but if it were to happen I want a hammer big enough to end the discussion. What's Ben's ole saying "An ounce of prevention is worth a night in bandages" :-D I think you get my drift.

just to throw a monkey in the wrench..but Brownells had a decent price on the Varmit stock rear and forearm...

couldn't u buy the adjustable Choate and then sell the ill fitting Ultra off to maybe break even?

i like the NEFs cause i can buy half a stock..smuggle her in..then buy the other end:)

just a thought..

I'll make another suggestion for you.Since this is a 25-06 and the recoil from them isn't all that bad...look at any of the on-line supply houses...and get a Morgan adjustable recoil pad. They make 2 types of pads to go on them...a curved on...and a shotgun one...this way you can adjust the pad up or down to fit your face.If it is beating you in the shoulder...your holding out of the pocket...and have to adjust it in.If your free recoiling it...trying for tiny groups...your too far away and allowing it to recoil into your shoulder & collar bone...and you need to adjust you shooting position.

I have some 45-70 loads that are brutal...and with the right recoil pad and cheek pad...they are very managable and don't hurt...

You simply file down the metal base on it...not the pad...

JM: I maybe wrong but I think you will find that most Handi owners have more than just Handi's in their arsenal. One of my favorite deer rifles is a Marlin lever in .35 Rem. Hand's fill a nitch as a grab-it and go/ knock around rifle, accurate enough for any hunting situation, inexpensive enough that if you drop it in the creek you won't go into cardiac arrest. As far as dangerous game, I've hunted all through the UP of Michigan, Hiawaitha National Forest, round the Big and Little Two Hearted rivers. I've always been warned to watch out for bears. Honestly I've found the tracks and droppings but while hunting or trout fishing I've never ran into one. The same warning has been given for poisinous snakes in southern IN, in 30 years {knock wood}have run into one Copperhead. While niether area is known as high population areas, you're still more likely to bust a leg in a fall or just plain get lost, so definately give some thought about being under gunned with a single shot.

Remember that stocks for a handi are not that expensive. Numrich carries them unfinished under $10. Get one and if you like wood working cut and graft to your hearts content until you have something that will fit you. Doesn't have to win a beauty contest as long as it fits, you still have original for purty. Hang In There, They're To Much Fun: <>< Duce:

Duce I agree with you, but last year Elk hunting I ran into a 300# Blackie looking for food. He paid me no never mind but I sure was curious about him. Just waddled off looking for Grub no problems. last week hunting dove I ended a rattlesnakes afternoon. I normally leave them alone this one was a little to close and i introdued him to a load of #8's.  The main reason for my dissatisfaction with the Ultra is it gives me a banging headache ever time I shoot it. This is rugged country I hunt and just like the insurance of more than one shot. I love my fluted 223 it doesn't bother me. It's a keeper! I purchased a Custom 6.5 Swede yesterday and a Custom FN Mauser in 308 today. To very nice outfits. I'll purchase other Handi's but in the lighter calibers for Varmints. Plus i didn't grow up in New Mexico I grew up a neighbor in Columbus, Ohio.
