« on: August 15, 2005, 11:00:22 AM »
ok fellas need help on deciding on which scope to mount on my 1895.
fixed or variable?
right now i found a couple in the 4x32 and the 2-7,1-5, etc.
since my scope on my 300 wsm is variable but i mainly keep it
between 4 and 6 so any hints is welcome...

Have you looked into going with a scout mount?   I have a scout mounted leupold 2.5x  on my Marlin guide gun and really can't think of a better setup.

If you want a normal scope look hard at the 1.5-5 leupold or the 1.75-5 burris.  If fixed power is what your looking for its hard to be a striaght 2.5 or 4x from any of the big name makers.

In the september shooting magazine they do a review of the weaver 1-3, burris 1.75-5, and nikon 1.5-4.5.   It might be worth reading.

I use a cheap shotgun scope on a weaver mount pushed as far as I could forward. Plenty of eye relief & only 1.5X. Just what I was looking for. It points real nice & its easy to get on target. I never tried a scout mount & doubt I will. To each his own but if I take this scope off it'll be to put the Williams reciever sight back on.
I was afraid this scope couldn't take the pounding but its survived so far.
I dont shoot many heavy loads tho, mostly just Factory 405's.

Frosty -

All three of my Marlins sport scopes in Warne medium height Quick Disconnect rings and bases, as well as Williams FireSight front sights.  Just a suggestion, as you may want to dismount the scope for fun or in bad weather.

As to the scopes, my .30-30 and .375Win have Leupold M8-4x 32mm scopes I picked up used for $100 each.  These work very well, but the .45-70 has a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33 that I like even better.

Perhaps my largest concern with a scope on the .45-70 was eye relief.  the VX-II gave me almost 5" of eye relief and even with my heaviest recoiling loads (460g @ 1812fps, 48 foot-pounds recoil) I don't get with by the scope.   The VXII is fairly compact, too, which was important to me.  I tend to crank it up to 7x for load development and back down to 4.5x for hunting.

Scope for your 1895

This is what I put on mine.  This is one great setup.  Points like a shotgun.  Rifle comes up to your shoulder and the dot is right there, bang.  Stands up to full house 45/70 420gr LBT loads.

I have mounted a few scopes on the 444. It currently sports a Simmons 8 Point shotgun scope 1.5-5 variable with a 32 mm objective and it works for me. Good scope for the coin and it will be hunting soon with some homerolled 265 grain hornady's in the Elk and Moose country. Regards
