8mm mauser

Who made this mauser?. The receiver is marked  the letters T C over a small star and what looks like a upside down half moon. On one side of the moon are the letters A S on the other side of the moon are the letters FA. Under the moon are the letters ANK ARA and a date 1936 or 38.

I was told it is a 8mm mauser. It appears to be un altered with a full stock and a bayonet. ( I did not see the bayonet so I can't tell you what the markings on it is.

any Idea who made it and what it may be worth?

What you have is a Turkish Mauser.I believe from your description it is an 03-38 model.They are usually pretty accurate rifles if the bore is in good shape.It is 8MM.Current value would be from $60 to $85 depending on condition.This is the price all of the major distributors currently list for them.

Yes you have a Turkish Mauser.  I have one just like it that I got at a gun show for $60.00 including a bandolier of 70rds of ammo.  It is the same one that that sportsmansguide is selling for $299.00 (major rip off but you CAN get it mail order without an FFL so it will sell)

I wouldn't call sportsmans guide a joke at all.  Its up to us to shop smart and not to get ripped off but we must know were to find what we are looking for too.  Sportsmans guide was the very first one to offer Czech 7,62x54 ammo by the case 880rds delivered for $85 when there was non to be found at all this was back during the 7,62x39 / 7,62x54 ammo shortage.  They sure have had some great deals on stuff in the past unmatched by anyone too.  I consider sportsmans guide to be a very good source for hunting stuff too great deals in camo clothes and hunting boots too.  If you went past the turk mauser page you would see some deals.  Time to time they have 7,62x39 ammo for 1,000rds for $59 too no one beats that either.

I remember when the Turk '38 8mm Mausers were $39.95 at AIM. And they can still be found for under $100 if you look.

The hottest 8mm Mauser buy right now to me is the german 98k 8mm mausers captured  and reworked by the yugo's with the yugo cest in good condition for $89.87  your getting a german quality 98k mauser with a yugo price.  There's just no feel like a German 98 action.

Sportsmansguide is pretty great IMHO.
I've gotten tons of things from them without a single complaint.  Even the one time I DID have a problem (they forgot to pack one item in my order) I called them and they next day aired the missing item!
Still pays to shop around... cabelas sometimes beats em with 7.62x39mm sales...
Like they say....An educated consumer........
That $299.00 may be worth it to people who may not want to buy through an FFL, or don't want to have to fill out a 4473.
They had a mauser convert some time back that was converted to 7.62x39mm!  But the gun was originally make pre-1898, so now FFL!
I almost got it cause of the caliber!  Man a nice cheap cheap! mauser shooter!  But I could not talk myself into paying $499.00 for one!  But lotsa people did get em!

I see lots of complaints on them too and to be honest I have never seen what I considered a bargain in their catalog that I could not do better elsewhere.

rickyp, If you look at the ads from a distributor you will find better prices than you will on an auction board.You're correct there are high prices on most auction boards.But check the websites of the major distributors like AIM,J&G,SOG,Etc.

I once bought a stock from sportsman guide a new unfinished turk stock with no metal hardware.  I received a used cracked peace of junk that had a rusted up butt plate on it at best it could be used for fire wood maybe.  The catalog and web page at the time only had the new stocks listed I immediately returned it.  They claimed to have sent a used one by mistake but they could not provide me with an item number for the used ones upon request.  Maybe somebody got a new one and put their old one in a the box and returned it then they sold it to me with out inspecting it but then again maybe pigs really can fly.

I throw all their catalogs in the trash.

$60 for a rifle this would make a great cabin / truck rifle. just have your gunsmith put a scope mount on it and a $40 bushnell scope and you are all set

Just got done restoring one of those 38 Turks. Its far to long and good looking to be a truck gun.  A good truck gun would be one of the $49 M44 Nagants from Samco.

Sportsmans guide has been the place at times for discounted new ammo and since you reload only I can see where you wouldn't be interested in anything they have.  Its nice to shoot a combination of surplus, new and reloaded ammo so i'm not tied to the reloading bench all the time even though i'm retired too.  I have to get the most bang for my buck since i'm frugal. (one cheap sob)

I picked up some $100+ new 1,000 gram insulated Lake of the Woods hunting boots for $40 a pair a few years ago. They have a big selection of hunting boots priced affordable. I also found insulated hunting camo bib for $59 in their guide gear brand that wasn't bad either for my son.  They also had a clearance on camo hunting clothes made by Walls too at times too.  Most hunting specials are in the springtime when the season is over thats the time to get ready.
