If these are SOLID brass (not brass-plated), then it would make a nice handle. There are two sizes of these listed:
Like GG said, you will want to solder the handle to the threaded shaft so the splines are irrelevant.
Faucet handles make great elevation gear. The handles on that site are repros, but the one I used is a real antique, at least 100 and possibly 150 years old. This is the photo of the handle sent to by the company where I purchased it:

Edit: I've been meaning to mention that the server where I stored many of the photos linked to posts was recently 'upgraded'. Somehow during the upgrade, all of my photos were corrupted. So in many of my older posts the photos are either not showing at all, or are all garbled up.
I plan to get those that are linked in the stickies fixed, but recent events have prevented me from doing so.
