I wonder how many of these thompson center factory and custom company  barrel problems are shooter related or shooters that don't walk around in the real world,,(I can't get my 10" 470 nitro to hold a 1' group at 300yards) ..
I think there is a lot of people out there that think just because there is one person out there that has the ability to do something they automatily can to and when they cant it must be the gun or the barrel ( it can't be them)...
I started shooting a 15' 30-06 encore in late 96 eight months later 25 boxes of ammo and a reloading set up I still had maybe a 5" group and was just about to give up all this t/c crap..then 20min at the range with someone allot wiser then me my groups shrank to 1" and then less with a good choice of factory ammo and practice ..

I know allot of people will read this and say " the barrel I had had a problem it was not me" and they know this to be true because they sent it out to someone or some company that made money off them to find and fix the problem ...
I know I am not the only one that has ever picked up a gun and could not handel it with out some helpful info and for all you that think because he can you can JOIN US IN THE REAL WORLD..

I think when we get one of these problematic barrels we should lend it out to some of the people who have all good luck with t/c barrels and see what they can make it do..

And finally yes there problems some times with theses guns and factory/custom barrels but if it was that often and that bad  they wont be in business long..

pgYou could have a valid point there. Take the TC .22lr match---my 10 inch barrel will shoot ragged bug holes at 50 yds with Wolf Match Target if I am having a good day. However, if I don't have my forearm screw tensioned properly or if I had too much coffee, I have shot 3"" groups until I settle down and tune it up just right!  :eek:

I think your full of it! It's never been me, it's all those junk barrels, I'm perfect! :wink:

Just kiddin...

I've had a few barrels that I just couldn't do anything with for one reason or another. With one in particular, a rechamberd barrel to 357 max, seemed like no matter what I did I just couldn't get it to shoot, sold it to a fellow who didn't have a problem at all with it. But for the most part I've had very good luck with almost every contender barrel I've ever had. Some shot anything I stuffed in em, others took some experimenting but proved great once I found what they like.

My biggest trouble right now is revolvers,  fine at 25yrds, fair at 50yrds but any farther and whatever I'm shooting at is as safe as if it where in it's mother's arms.  I really need to keep trying.  :D

I think the only barrel that I have sent back for replacement was my 15 inch 243 winchester encore barrel.
I took it to the range with brand new reloaded brass,I took 3 shots and every time I removed the case it had 3 scratches on the neck in the same places. I stoped shooting that barrel and sent it back to T/C and the sent me aback a new barrel saying the old one had a bad chamber, the new barrel had the chamber cleaned up and polished before they sent it to me.It is easy to see what they did, about 3/4 the bluing is missing out of the chamber.

bb, I would say that to be a pretty fair statement.
I will also add that TC's quality control leaves somthing to be desired. The barrels that do get out of the shop with a definate problem, should never have made into a shipping box.
I have had a bunch of factory TC barrels in the past. Some shot very well right out of the gate. Others, well just never made the cut. The ones I could not get to shoot usually made their rounds through my circle of friends to see if any of us could get better or more acceptable results.
I did find out a long time ago that TC has no accuracy guarantee. But, for the most part, how many guns do that fall into the same price window.
I used to be happy with 3-4" groups at 100m. For the game I play now, if it won't do 1" or less at 100, after a fair amount of fooling with it, it is history. The last TC barrel I bought was a 308 for my Encore, that thing has digested every load I have fed it.

With the custom barrels for TC's I have had, all have meet this goal with a lot less fooling at the range and the load bench.  Another thing, the custom guys I have gone through have ALL been very helpful when there was a problem encountered. When I had specked a chamber for one barrel and it was wrong, the man greatfully sent me a new one, and apologized as well.

Just differnt strokes fer different folks.

I do know one thing, my Contender and Encore 15" barrels are more accurate for me  than my Encore rifle barrels, (except for my 204 rifle barrel!) I may not be fair though, my only other Encore barrels are 7mm-08 and 209X50 Black Powder ................

Great post..........I have no clue how many times I have asked my self the same question. I have two factory barrels I bought from users who had trouble getting them to shoot.......they both shot for me right from the start...factory ammo. I did have one I couldn't ever get to shoot but that was a while back and I feel I have learned a few things since that would have helped.

Right now I am having trouble with a 7mm-08 kicking like a mule "I need a muzzle tamer, no a better stock or maybe a better rest"  NO What I come to find out is when I put the scope on at work "without the stock" the eye relief dose not work with the way I shoulder the gun and when I try to compensate I can not hold a group...My fault  and I can admit it and I will fix..

I have sent two barrels back to the manufacturer, and they both went to bullberry.  Minor probs, but there none the less.  

I agree that most of the time it is in the shooter, be it loads, technique, loose scopes, etc.

If you want to resolve the 7-08 probs, double plug!.  Regular formed ear plugs, then muffs over top.  NO noise.  Take out that factor.  Also, a good shooting (weightlifting or baseball) glove.  Take a little punishment out of the recoil.  Soil grip and light squeeze.  Worked for me with my 30 Bower Alaskan (pure punishment!)

What are you putting in that coffee?

Just kidding. I always test loads at least twice, and if it is a real good load 3 times. Some days I am not as good off the bench as others. Dry firing can help you tell what kind of day you should be having. Sometimes it is simply a matter of getting the rest set up just right or the stool just right. Sometimes taking a break and getting a drink of something other than"coffee" like water or sport drink may help settle things down.

I have a 14" 7-30 contender that will shoot around 1 " all day. I recently took it out and was shooting 2 1/2" to 3" groups. I have both factory brass and various 30-30 fireformed brass and decided it was possibly from shooting the mixed brass. When I got back home, I discovered that the trigger adjustment screw had backed out some. Re- adjusted the trigger and the next time out at the range shot around 1" groups again even with mixed brass.

I do have one 7-08 encore barrel that will not shoot well with any of the ten loads I have tried. It is not me, because I have a 243 that shoots very well and I shoot it either before or after the 7-08 with good results. It may be the scope or mounts. I plan to try some different mounts and scope next time out.

I am using these for hunting so real small groups are not always needed. I do like to know the capability of whatever I am shooting.

So much of shooting accurately is between the ears that I have to agree with Steve P.  If the shooter expects it to hurt some reaction to lessen that will happen, normally pulling the shot.  Do what you can to make the experience pleasant.  Shoot lots.  Work on being consistent.  Lay off the caffene.  It all helps.  Then if you can't get things to work look at the mechanical things.

I have to agree with a lot of the above statements.  90% of shooting accurately is mental.  In a lot of these forums, there also seems to be the mentality that any firearm coming out of the box is fundamentally flawed, and will never be an accurate gun until a lot of money is put out for customization, or the action/barrel/stock, etc. has had some home shop modification to it.  IMO, TC Contender and  Encores are just different guns.  Even for an experienced shooter of bolt guns or semi-auto and revolver handguns, the fit, feel, and function of a TC gun is different enough that a person has to spend a good bit of time with the weapon to adjust to it.
