Loc tite the screws on my scope mounts?
« on: February 27, 2003, 09:23:39 AM »
I am putting the scope on my 30-06. Should the 4 top screws on the rings(the ones that actually hold the scope) get loc tite? Would it be allright to put the loc tite on after the scope is mounted and let it run down into the threads? Thanks

I personally would NOT put loctite on the rings.  If you ever want to take the scope off, you will have your hands full, plus a good chance that you will have to get new rings.

There are several grades/types of loctite.I just mounted a new scope yesterday and used green loctite on the ring cap screws. This is the one with the least holding strength for small screws. The fingernail polish is good too. I used Red (permanent) loctite in the base screws. I know it's there and has to be heated to get it to release. :D

I use it on all my bases AND RINGS.  But I don't use the Red loctite - I use Blue (medium).  As a result, my scopes have always stayed in place with NO problems, and, if I ever need to take the rings off, I can.  However, I do not recommend using the Red one - it's too permanent and strong.

The recoil from the 30-06 won't knock the screws loose? Even if shooting light magnum loads? Thanks

Terry,

Like I said, I would have it BLUE loc-tited.  I use light magnums in my .30-06 with no problems.

Look, you don't NEED to have rings and bases Blue loc-tited, but it's great insurance to have, and it's not that difficult to remove if you ever want to remove the scope for whatever reason.

Terry, the locktite you mention that is put on after assembly is the green (weakest) type. It's what I used but Zachary is correct in saying you don't have to use it. The scope rifle combos that are the worst offenders of coming loose are magnums with 30mm scopes. It's caused by the weight of the scope and heavy recoil. Like Zachary, I used the locktite for insurance. I didn't have it on the rings for the first scope I had on the rifle. The ring cap screws were still nice and tight after 200 rounds and two hunting seasons.
