Re-chambering Question
« on: September 20, 2005, 06:21:55 AM »
Hi Everyone,

My hunting partner has his eye on a pre-64 M70 that was re-chambered from .300 H&H to .300 WBY Mag. The rifle looks to be in excellent shape. What he asked me to ask here is, would it be possible to have it re-chambered  back to the original .300 H&H caliber which is still stamped on the barrel? I've told him if he likes it he should just use it as it is or find one in .300 H&H, but he's been bugging me to find out for him if this is possible (he's 72 and hates computers  :-)  ). Thanks! CEJ..

P.s. Looks like I've survived the layoffs for now   :-)
If I can't take my rifles with me, I don't want to go!

Bad news first - It is rare to re-chamber a rifle with a smaller chamber, as one has to cut the barrel back a bit, and then re-chamber it, whereas when you move up in case size you only have to bore it out.
Good news, unless I am mistaken, the 300 Wby is basically an improved 300 H&H, and as such, it is safe to fire 300 H&H cartridges in a 300 WBY chambered rifle.  I would check with someone smarter than myself first, but I know of others who have done this with no other ill effects than a slight loss in velocity.

If he doesn't like it, he'd probably be better off selling it and getting another in 300 H&H.  But my question is WHY?  300 Wby is far more common than 300 H&H.  If he wants something milder, 300 Win mag seem slike a better idea.

And I concur that I have read many places that 300 H&H can indeed be safely fired in 300 Wby.

Hi Guys,
I thought it was possible to fire a 300 H&H in a .300 WBY but I can't find my interchangeability chart. He's decided to pass on this one since he's got a line on another one in 300 H&H. I guess he's on a classic kick, he's picked up a 7x57 and a 30-06 in pre-64 model 70's. He's also talking about a .375 H&H to round out the battery. Nice to be retired I guess :-D  Thanks for the replies! CEJ..
