why did you choose the encore and or contender
« on: July 27, 2005, 08:50:09 AM »
hello,

I was just sitting here at work thinking about guns and was interested to see why people went the tc way?  and if people feel having a single shot helps them or hinders them while hunting?

thanks

This whole TC mess started for me in 1979. I traded around several different guns, pistols, rifles and whatever. Ended up with a TC Contender pistol in 22lr. Took it to the range a few times and it just stomped my buddies 22lr rifles for accuracy out to 50 yds. I bought up a small collection of pistol barrels (at that time barrels were going for around $100) and finally bought into one big enough to use for big game....7-30 Waters 14". First year I used it shot a beautiful little buck antelope and later a buck deer. I kind of put them aside for a few years ...playing with various bolt rifles and handguns of different sorts.
In 1996 I made a trip out to see my sister who lives out on the plains of CO....never been there before. Her husband showed me several areas of his farm that had hundreds of prairie dogs on them....too bad I was n't set up to shoot them...at least not at those ranges. I then went about the business of assembling a pair ( need that because my son shoots too) of ultra accurate TC Contender rifles along with some bolt rifles I purchased esspecially for that. We take them out six or seven times a year for three or four days and cut loose....going this Sunday as a matter of fact.
I have never felt handicapped using a single shot gun of any kind as long as it was adequate to begin with. I do use other types of guns but I will never let go of my TCs.

a friend of mine had a contender, i played with his and was impressed with the quality and accuracy, so i bought one, then i bought a few barrels. eventually i bought a 21 inch .22k-hornet barrel. i liked the carbine so much, i traded all my pistol barrels for carbine barrels! i,m very comfortable with this gun! i only have to master one trigger. even when i switch barrels, the handling qualitys are the same!
the only thing i dont like about break open actions is when your shooting off the bench, off of sand bags or a machine rest! you have to take the gun off the bags for every shot. it's just more work than a bolt gun.
but where they really shine is off hand. where i belive them to have supierior balance, and better handling quality's. (just my opinion)
i'm perfectly comfortably hunting with my contender!

For about 20 years I was into the Contenders, but now the Encores are for me.  :D

I chose T/C because of the wide selection of calibers & configurations, and the fact that, as I teach my daughters to shoot and hunt, the fact that they have to make the 1st shot count 'cuz there ain't a fast follow-up is  an invaluable tool.  Besides, I can honestly look at my wife and say, "No, I didn't buy a new gun, just part of one."

I was in the market for a new muzzleloader and was about to buy the Omega made by TC because of the reputation of accuracy and ease of cleaning.  My buddy asked me why I was wasn't considering the Encore, and I said " I don't know".  I looked at the Omega and Encore side by side and it was a no-brainer!  I got the 209x50 and love it.  Also have the 204 barrel for it.

Was shooting with a friend one day about 18 years ago and he had a Contender Pistol in 35 Rem.  I shot it and decided I needed one of them.  It was my first handgun.  The 35 Rem barrel I first bought is gone now, but 13 other barrels take its place.  Accurate and fun to shoot and I love being able to change calibers.  I actually get frustrated with my other pistols because I am used to the accuracy I get from my Contender.

I also have some Contenders and Encores in rifle form.  They are also accurate easy to handle guns.  I do prefer the feel of the Contender rifles over the Encores except for the 209x50.

TC is ambidextrous.

I'm not particularly worried about follow up shots.  Where I hunt my ranges are < 100 yrds... if you can't hit a margin of deer at that range you shouldn't be hunting.

Several reasons, Number one being my Dad (Chuck White) has one and I liked the feel of it and respect his recommendation. Two, versatility, being in the military I move around and have to be flexible as far as regulations go. Three, being left handed I can use it and not have to pay extra prices for my "Handicap".

BECAUSE WERE SICK!!!
It' a disease that has no cure.
Four Contender frames, Five Encore frames, and enough barrels to anchor a large boat.
Hmm, I wonder whats next?

I had a Contender pistol for years and loved it. Bought an Encore 50x209, and then 7mm-08 and 204 barrels for it. Then got an Encore pistol frame and 7mm-08 b15"ss barrel for it. Man does it shoot. It's shoots better than the 08 rifle barrel. Just ordered a 460 S&W barrel for it.........can;t wait to compare it to the 7-08...........

Well I had a Left handed bow for sale ( that I got for nothing )and a guy offered me to trade  even up for a T/C Encore rifle in 209X50 that was used 1 time
As you could imagine ..I couldn't pass it up.
And now I am hooked and plan to buy more barrels for it.

I too was attracted to the versatility of this gun (different states have different laws, and I move around quite a bit) as well as its reputation for accuracy.  Personally, I like the fact that it's a single shot.  For deer hunting, who needs more than that?   8)

Why.... Because Bill Jordan, Nichael Waddell, Larry Weishun, etc, etc, are using them.... Ha ha

I bought mine because I was in the market for a new rifle and decided that the Encore would probably be really neat to have.

I was making plans a year ahead of my next income tax check and I decided it was time to get myself an honest to goodness deer rifle.  I had thought about a Marlin 45/70 (since the lever gun is king up here).  But six months out I thought about getting an NEF single shot rifle to tide me over til I could get the Marlin.  But my strange reasoning set in and I said "If Im gonna get a single shot why not the Encore instead of the Marlin?"  So six months later the tax check comes in, the Encore goes home with me and Im still wondering if Ill ever get eround to buying that Marlin  :) .

I wanted one platform (light weight) and multiple options. I heard TC's were pretty accurate and everyone who had one was happy with it. So, I bought the G2 in .223 with 17m2 and 6.8 Rem barrels. A .375 JDJ and .204 barrels will be coming soon.

I'm over 50 years old and have owned guns since I was under 10 years old. I currently have more guns than I have time to shoot, but I gotta tell you, I've never owned a gun I've been as happy with as this new G2.

I won't tell you how accurate it is right out of the box (17m2 & .223). I don't want a bunch threads accusing me of being a liar.

I would not call you a liar.........................
The first time I shot my 209x50 last Fall I was quite impressed---It grouped under 1.5in at 100yrds(at times below 1in)
I shot my .257 Roberts barrel this week and had a 1/4in group!!! Now I didnt have time to shoot it a bunch but am sure it is a very accurate barrel!!!!!!The biggest group was an inch
I am no benchrest competition shooter so I know it is the barrels and not so much the shooter!!!!!!!!!

Well way back when about thirty years ago a co worker introduced me to his Contender with a .22 lr, 256 and 45/410 barrel. I fell in love. I have a Contender frame with .22 WMR, .222 Rem and a .375 win barrels and two Encores with .22/250 tac driver rifle barrel, .243, 7mm08, 218 bee custom (on the way to my house) and a custom .22 WMR WZL rifle barrel(on order with OTT). I really like the Encore and have thought about getting rid of the Contender for more Encore stuff but I can't bring myself to do it.

I didn't choose the Encore, it chose me!  I had no control in the situation I had to buy it.  At least that is the story I told my wife.  I now have (2) frames, (2) .270 barrels (one custom), a .30-06, a .223, a 12 gauge turkey barrel and a .50 cal ML barrel.  I think a pistol barrel is next on the list?

How much size/weight difference is there between the Encore and the G2(frame)? And...Does anyone know if there is a stainless G2 in the works?
