Big Hogs in TX: Any with no fence?
« on: July 17, 2006, 04:55:46 PM »
Hi Guys,

Looking to hunt for a trophy boar in TX the last week in December, and wondering if anyone could recommend an outfitter that has a high success rate on these animals without fences?  If the no-fence thing is not achievable, please explain.  I have had a hard time finding someone without high fences in TX

Would appreciate any replies asap =)

Trophy boar, no fence, and high succes rate  may be a bit difficult. Free range hogs have a wide range. I hunt hogs several weekends a year in an area with lots of hogs, and where numerous big boars have been taken (http://reedfamilyranch.com/). My success ranges from nothing to a 200 pound boar. It's the nature of hunting.

Most places that have high success rates on trophy boars are put and take operations. I have nothing against them and will hunt them if given the opportunity. I would rather they trap them off ranches and put them on a hunting ranch (which can range from a few hundred to thousands of acres) than just have the ranchers shoot them on sight.

You really need to make up your mind what's important to you. Free range and BIG hogs and high success rates are kinda mutually exclusive goals. So which do you want and which will you compromise to get it?

Real big hogs are usually (not always) pen raised and are seldom available free range. They bought them and don't want them to get away without being shot and paid for by a client. High success rates in free range can be had at least at times but if the hogs are free to move to another piece of property at times they will and leave you high and dry. So high success rates are usually found mostly on fence property or when running with dogs.

The Nail Ranch is one that's free range and has a pretty good success rate cuz they have tons of hogs but I don't think they'll promise you a certain size hog for the money. Pretty much anyone who promises a 300 pound or over hog is gonna be hunting pen raised generally speaking.

I kinda agree with curdog. I live in northcentral Tx and we have lots of hogs. I hunt them when-ever I want to and when farmers and ranchers call me. We have some 350# plus hogs and a bunch of little bitty ones. The truth is a wild hog seldom lives beyond 6 years and they are in know way territorial. They follow the food supply and avoid the pressure. Their teeth wear out at about that age and they get weak and die or predators kill them. Corn, acorns, pecans ect... are hard to eat with out teeth. One more thing that will probably start a fire with some. Before you go out and buy a cannon to go on your hunt. Hogs ain't that hard to kill. Sometimes I hunt'em with a 4570, sometimes a 3030, sometimes a 357mag rifle, but sometimes I hunt them with a AR15. No I don't hose'em down with it. I killed one last year with a Blackhills 52gr match that weighed about 360. Caught him nappin under a cedar. One shot. He never got up. Just a little info from a life long resident (56yrs) who also used to raise hogs.

Fire started somewhat, haha.
A lot depnds on where you hit them, and what frame of mind
they are in at the time. Yes, I've also killed them with a .223, but
I've also seen them hit with a .30-06 and run off.

No, I agree. I saw a clown hit a 350lb sow high in the ribs with a 3040 Krag and never knew he hit her. Shot plum thru her but nothing vital. He shouldn't have tried the shot. It would have been a slow death except she circled me in thick cover and came up behind me. Shot her in the face (if a hog has a face) at about 30 feet with a 405gr hard cast at 1750fps and it exited her at the back of her right ham. Didn't have to track her she was laying on the last set she had just made. The 4570 is good if you get into brush with a sow that has little one's or your in the brush with a big boar that the dogs have aggravated. Other wise it's just fun to shoot'em with it. I think a 3030 with a nosler is hard to beat and don't hurt on my end of the gun.

Curdog you are about 26 miles from me. There are some deranged Texans down here that hunt just like you do. I trust the hogs more than I do the pit bulls I'll bet you use. I'm too old for that kinda stuff. Knives at my age are for when you've tried every thing else and none of it worked. Happy huntin and stay out of the heat.

Might just do that. Can you use a 4 wheeler or do you walk. Some days my knee are good and some they aren't.

Sounds good. I've had surgery on both now they want to replace them . Nope! Aleve still works. Is a recon scout too big a knife. I have a couple of smaller ones. I got your number I'll give you call later on.

Yes, you are crazy!   ;D  I've hunted that way a good number of times now.  The first time I thought would be the last time with some of the happenings,  but I go back when I get a chance to hunt with folks who have dogs.   I don't own dogs myself, but enjoy going along when I get a chance.   Recently made a few hunts in Normangee Tx the last being with dogs.   That was fun as usual and we did bag a couple of nice hogs.   They used one horse, and one ATV,  we drove a big 4WD 2 seat Kawasaki Mule, did the rest on foot.

I did learn from hunting that way, that the briar britches I bought from Academy aren't very good at keeping the hide in tact.  I followed the lead of the dog owners and picked up a pair of heavy leather western chaps for such occassions and they have saved alot of hide already.  LOL

Curdog I still have your number and as soon as it cools off, me and that bowie and 45 are heading north to see if your dogs can find a hog.

elmer, Graybeard and I have both hunted the Reed Family Ranch a time or two.  GB took a nice sized gray hog with one of his revolvers our first trip out there.  Quite a tracking adventure!  Maybe he will post up the photo on this thread...
