.223 HELP
« on: September 15, 2005, 05:28:06 PM »
I cannot make up my mind!  I dont know if I should get a 12" or 15" .223 barrel.  I will not be shooting over 100 yards, so can someone give me the pros and cons of both. Thanks

You will get better performance and velocity out of the 15" barrel.

kates,

223 in 15'' has the closest to complete stabilization of the two choices..
plus you can always cut it and crown it if you find length objectionable.

jaw :-)

My 15" Contender 223  shoots MOA at 100 yards with Burris 3X scope.....so you know what I would recommend.

If you are only shooting to 100 yards, why not get a hornet?  It will be cheaper to shoot!

Sorry, have to tease.   I have shot silhouette with my open sight .223.  Closest targets were 50 yards.  Furthest out to 200 meters.  With the scoped .223, it really doesn't get fun till you get to 200 yards plus.

Get the 15" barrel and see how fun they get at 200 yard plus!!   :)

Good luck and enjoy whichever you choose.

My 14" Contender, rested, shoots sub 1/2 MOA groups at 100. I think either 12 or 15 would be fine for 100 yds. The 12 might be easier to shoot semi offhand. The 15 will probably be more accurate off the bench. My only short contender is a 10" 45 mag. I don't expect to use it beyond 50 yds.
