.41 rem mag revolver and ammo ??????
« Reply #30 on: August 23, 2005, 05:31:08 AM »
I shot some handloads using 210gr. Speer GDHP and 13gr. of Alliant Blue Dot powder this past weekend and accuracy was very good(for my skill level at least).  I shot 20 handloads with the above components and 20 factory Federal 210gr. JHP.  Both shot pretty well out to fifty yards.  I have loaded 20 rounds of the Speer Gold Dot load using the max. listed charge of Blue Dot (13.5gr) to see how that shoots this weekend.  What I found really surprising is how well the Blue Dot burned up!  I've heard the horror stories on this powder but frankly, it wasn't as bad as I thought.  In addition, the gun cleaned up really quick.  This was with a 6.5" Ruger Blackhawk.  If this batch of handloads proove at least as accurate as the first, then I have my 41mag hunting load for this year!

It is overpriced for me but a beauty.  This is a great gun.

Understand that I have nothing to do with this auction.  I post as an example of a gun discussed here, that is difficult to come by.

"I have used my SRH in 44 mag with 240 gr. XTP at 1500 fps to take deer with great results. The SRH has had a single action trigger job, barrel recrowned, forcing cone checked OK, wears 2-6X Bushnel, and groups 3" at 100 yds. I have been drawn for a cow elk tag and thinking about using the SRH. I always take "good" shots at game."

Sounds like you've got a good load there and have confidence in it. The 240 XTP load you have will work fine on elk. Just put the bullet(s) into the heart/lung area (not just the lungs) which is low between the front legs. The 240 XTP load you have will give you all the penetration and performance you need excluding the proverbial Texas heart shot.  I have seen several cow elk killed with almost the same load, i.e. 240 XTP at 1400-1500 fps. All died quite quickly and none really required a second shot.  One travel quite a ways - down to the bottom of thecanyon, hate it when that happens! Fortuneately there was a skid road down there to. I always swear I'll never shoot another elk on the downhill side of a road but it usually doesn't work out that way. Anyways, all shots were at 75 yards or less and into the heart/lung area. Can recall only one one recovered bullet which wen through both shoulders, was nicely expanded. I also have seen and killed several injured elk with .44 Magnums with barrels from 4" to 7 1/2" using other types of bullets from Super Vel HPs, PMC 180s, regular Remington SPs and hard cast Keith 250s or Lyman 275 gr GC bullets. Not really a whole lot of difference between them if the bullet is put into the heart/lung.  Good luck hunting and let us know how you did.

Don't you believe it. S&W is making the model 57 Mountain Gun and a couple of others, right now. Made in America! http://www.firearms.smith-wesson.com/store/index.php3?cat=293606&sw_activeTab=1

SB thanks for the link, I stand corrected.  I wish S&W would make 5 shot L-frame based .41 mag preferably with 5" barrel in stainless, I'd buy one today if they did.

If it were on Kaliforniastan's DOJ "safety-approved" list, I'd have a S&W M357PD .41Magnum in the safe right now. Probably be a nice lightweight packin' gun for the .41Magnum. :( But, it doesn't look like it will be anytime soon. The new M57 Mountain Gun is however and I plan to get one right after I wait the required 30 days from my last purchase.

I have 3 41s: 4" 57, 7.5" blue Bisley, 7.5 stainless Redhawk. I've been tempted by the Taurus 5 shot guns but don't want the ported barrel.  Sure wish SW latest mountain gun was stainless.  For here in AK stainless is the ONLY way to go. I negleted the Bisley once and had to replace the barrel for the cost I originally paid for the gun  (notice I never considered selling it?).  I pack the 57 some and its my tent gun when hunting but I'm oiling it almost daily.  Shot a real small caribou with the Redhawk and Corbon 265 cast (actually the ammo was too much for such a small animal but worked well).

I agree 41 is more fun.

Dand,

With the new S&W M57 Mountain Gun on the Kaliforniastan "approved" list it will be my next purchase in about 30 days. If I lived in Alaska, I'd look at one of the rust resistant finishes from Robar. You could find a M657 in 3, 4, or 6 inch for a good price and cut the 6 inch barrel. I have no idea how the S&W M357PD would take a finish. All I'm saying is... there is more than one way to skin a cat and NO, you can't have my SS .41Magnum Mountain Gun! :)

Sorry guys, wondered why that .44 post never showed up where it was supposed to.

What can I say other than I like the .41 also. Have a Ruger Bisley with 7 1/2" barrel. Went through a couple 57s, a 58 (never should a traded it off) and had a M28 converted to .41. Settled on the Bisley. Again sorry about the off topic post.

I am just back from Anchorage: Great Northern Guns has a M57 6 inch nickel but I forget the price.  Fred Meyer near Northern Lights and Seward Highway had a stainless 7.5 in Ruger Bisley with the scope  rings (is that the hunter configuration?).  Don't recall the price on it either.

Still looking for a 657 mt gun.
