The big trade

I've been a long time Marlin lever action fan, however, I find myself always looking at the Ruger #1, specifically the 1-A Sporter in 7x57. I like the feel of a shorter rifle in the brush. I've been pondering the idea of trading a Marlin 30-30 and 35 Rem. for one. I know the trade probably wouldn't be even, but I'm willing to give alittle cash to make it square. I would still keep my Marlin 375 Win. so I'm not getting rid of everything. What do you guys think, or am I just crazy? By the way I would use it for deer hunting, which I get to do about one week a year in Missouri, (if I'm lucky anymore), shots no longer than 150 yards. Thanks for any replies, J-P.

Just do it!!!!

I had a Marlin 1895 and traded it in for a #1 in 45/70.  I've NEVER looked back.  I've used it on all kinds of game and will again on a bison in a few weeks.  I also have one in 243 and is is also great.  I have a mauser in 7x57 and I expect the #1 will super in that cartridge.

Just a few things though; the receiver is longer or at least different in length from that of a bolt gun.  I found I needed to use off-set rings to get proper eye relief on one rifle.  On the 45./70, I ended up with a leupold scout scope set all the way forward and added a limbsaver pad to give me an extra 1" and the requisite 13" of eye relief.  On the 243, I used a pair of leuopld offset rings with a leupold 2x7 vari-x II and this was just perfect.

Good Luck!

Doug

I own some Marlins and have owned a Ruger #1B. No way I'd trade two Marlins for one Ruger #1, but I might trade two of the Rugers for one Marlin if I were to ever find myself with two. Of course after that experience I'll never find myself with one again.

JP,

Aren't you at least going to use the .35 for ONE deer season?  If not, I'll buy your dies and brass.

Also, if you get the Ruger, I hear the RSI is pretty sweet, if you can find one in 7x57.  Cabelas lists an aperture sight in their catalog (don't remember who makes it)  for the #1 that mounts onto the rear scope base.  That  would be nice to use at woods range.

See ya.
