17 Remington Primer choice
« on: September 01, 2005, 04:10:05 PM »
Once again I come to you with hat in hand with another question.

Everything I've read on the 17 Remington recommends the Remington 7 1/2 as the primer of choice.  Is there any reason I shouldn't use another primer such as Federal or CCI.  I've not been able to find the Remingtons in the local shops and I don't want to pay extra to special order them.

I am humbled by your knowledge
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.

I prefer the 71/2 Rem. for that round, but you can use what ever you have on hand and they will go bang.

Primer Thickness
« Reply #2 on: September 18, 2005, 03:42:26 PM »
After I posted this I ran into some more info on this and it is basically that the Remington primer is recommended because it has cup thickness to handle the higher pressure loads in the 17 Remington.

Apparently there was a problem with piercing primers with some other brands due to a thinner cup.

CCI 450 and Fed 205M were a couple that were recommended as substitutes.  Not being able to find Remington primers around here, I went with the CCI primers and everything looks okay so far.

There are no hard fast rules when it come to what will work best in your gun. I have several different small rifle primer on hand at all times. In some rifles I get better accuracy with one or another and in some it just don`t matter which primer is used. I have found that in most cases if one primer is better it is usually the 7 1/2`s on top, but not always.

Primers

I was having troubles with pierced CCI primers in my 25.06.  I switched to Federal in that rifle and haven't had a problem since.  That's the only time that I have seen a primer make a difference in my guns.  I don't do a lot of experimenting with primers.  Keep in mind that I'm shooting off the shelf factory rifles and my bench techniques and eye sight leave a bit to be desired.

I would imagine somebody doing some serious shooting would have a preference when it comes to primers.

If I run across some small rifle Remington primers around here, I'll sure give them a try.

I use both the Rem. 7 1/2 SR primer and the Fed. 205 Match SR primer and do not see any accuracy difference in either case.  Best wishes.
