How do you make 7-30 brass from 30-30 brass?
« on: September 14, 2005, 04:39:43 PM »
I am thinking about getting a 7-30 Waters carbine barrel for a Contender.  I have loads of once fired 30-30 brass.  Does it have to be fireformed, or can I just resize it and go?  Thanks in advance.

The shoulder gets blown forward, so you will have to fireform. I've decided that after pricing powder and bullets, it is better for me to just buy the brass ready to go.

Thanks, that's what I figured.  I think I'll do the same.  The time involved is also a factor.

I run the lubed 30-30 brass into the 7-30 sizing die. This puts what looks like a stepped shoulder on the brass. I am shooting a 14" contender barrel and use the fireform process for practice. This barrel is reasonably accurate and will shoot 1" groups at 100yds, if I can hold it steady. It will do it while i am fireforming also, but most groups fireforming are between 1 1/2" and 2". I shoot it off-hand, and supported on shooting sticks to shoot metal targets, (turkey, fox, and crow) at 200 yds. Don't miss many. I use the turkey off-hand, its bigger. I have some 7-30 brass and can't tell any difference between it and the 30-30 fireforemed Good luck.

I started out fire forming my 7x30 brass before loading but now i just neck the 30-30 down and go ahead and load it up for hunting or prctice( same load) because i have not found enough differnce in accurce to worry about. I use a lot of 30-30 brass because I live where I can get a lot of it for nothing.
be safe and god bless

I have the barrel on the way.  I just bought some brass formed from Win. 30-30 brass from E. Arthur Brown Co.  It doesn't need to be fireformed.  Got a pretty good deal on it, $30/100 plus shipping.  Dies are on the way as well.  I plan to load some 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tips.
